An inmate serving life year sentence who was among 18 escapees who broke out of Bomana Prison facility yesterday was recaptured late yesterday by police in the National Capital District. The recapture of the hardened criminal at Sabusa in the Central Province now leaves 17 of the escapees still at large as Correctional Service officers and Police continue their manhunt to capture  the fugitives on the run. A total of 18 high risk inmates, which includes 3 convicts and 15 remandees are now at large after breaking out of Bomana CS Facility this afternoon. Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told this newsroom that out of the three convicted inmates, one is on death row while the other two are serving life sentences. Commissioner Pokanis says the 15 remandees including the three are all high-risk prisoners. The program called Boosting Education Standards Together in PNG (BEST PNG) is supported by donor partner Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and Save the Children is the grant agent. A mass jailbreak took place around 1pm this afternoon at the Bomana CIS facility in Port Moresby. Correctional Service Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told this newsroom that the number of escapees is unknown at this time. “Currently jail officers are doing master roll to determine how many prisoners have escaped but we believe there may be a large number of them,” Mr Pokanis said.
