A total of 18 high risk inmates, which includes 3 convicts and 15 remandees are now at large after breaking out of Bomana CS Facility this afternoon. Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told this newsroom that out of the three convicted inmates, one is on death row while the other two are serving life sentences. Commissioner Pokanis says the 15 remandees including the three are all high-risk prisoners. A mass jailbreak took place around 1pm this afternoon at the Bomana CIS facility in Port Moresby. Correctional Service Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told this newsroom that the number of escapees is unknown at this time. “Currently jail officers are doing master roll to determine how many prisoners have escaped but we believe there may be a large number of them,” Mr Pokanis said. Details as to how the breakout happened is still unknown at this stage as investigations continue. “All this information will be out shortly,” Pokanis said. Two members of Parliament have joined the ruling Pangu Pati in an announcement made by the Prime Minister yesterday. The move takes Pangu Pati’s number to 37, following the suspension of another Pangu Pati member by the courts yesterday. The two MPs include South Bougainville MP and Minister of Information and Communication Technology Timothy Masiu and Bogia MP Robert Naguri. The National Court has suspended current Southern Highlands Province Governor William Powi from office effective August 31st and ordered a recount for the regional seat after a long battle in the court of disputed returns. This follows the Supreme Court’s decision last week in dismissing a slip rule application by Powi and the Electoral Commission on a National Court’s decision earlier that ordered a recount. St John Ambulance today opened its new Ambulance Station at Baruni with the aim to serve a population of around 30, 000 people in the surrounding Motu Koita villages as well as the whole Moresby North West electorate. The service was made possible with the assistance of Papua New Guinea Construction Realty (PNGCR) in allocating a space and doing the facility set up for St John to operate in.
