Prisons in the country are facing limited resources to house inmates and with more people being found guilty if crimes and sent to the prison facilities, this limited resource is now a major concern. The police investigation into apprehending the University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) students responsible for the burning of the school’s property during a recent protest, has led to over 50 students arrested and charged. After a brutal statement of burning five (5) school vehicles on September 18th, two more vehicles were burnt to ash on Wednesday 20th in the University of Natural Resources and Environment, Vudal Campus in Kokopo, ENB. On Monday early morning, two convicted prisoners escaped from the Correctional Service (CS) of Papua New Guinea Bomana (PNG). Both escapes have been identified as men from Mekeo and Western Province who were tasked to carry their community service during this time when they snuck out of sight and fled the location. The escapees are classified as low risk prisoners but are still considered to be dangerous.
