PNG CAN ABSORB 10% TARIFF| TKATCHENKO PNG CAN ABSORB 10% TARIFF| TKATCHENKO
Papua New Guinea (PNG) can absorb the United States (U.S) imposed 10% Tariff on local exports without affecting the economy says Foreign Affairs Minister, Justin Tkatchenko. In an interview with PNG HAUSBUNG on Monday, Minister Tkatchenko said that when it comes to other countries like Fiji, they got over 30% Tariff and people are asking why Fiji was slapped with so much. It is because Fiji export more to the U.S.A especially their Fiji water and other commodities that they send over to the U.S market. “The U.S are saying that countries like Fiji need to have more tariff (30%) placed on their export products to the U.S because these products are not U.S produced. But as for Papua New Guinea, we will work with the United States and the new Trump administration to ensure it is a win-win situation at the end of the day. We are currently implementing the Defense Corporation Agreement (DCA) which is a multi-million-dollar investment into Papua New Guinea and some announcement on that infrastructure development and programs and projects will be announced very shortly in a joint press conference and announcement with the U.S and PNG on how the DCA is now rolling out and the awarding of contracts for different purposes for the security and economic benefit of PNG,” Minister Tkatchenko said. He acknowledges the 10% Tariff imposed by the U.S, but he feels that it can be absorbed as per the information given by the Treasury Department and Finance Department. “I believe the 10% Tariff will not harm or downgrade PNG’s relationship with the US as they are a very important economic and security partner and I look forward to working with them and come to compromise, working together, communicating, talking and understanding what the issues are and if there is an issue that the US would like more information on or do more with, we will have an open door policy,” he said. Minister Tkatchenko said he looks forward to the continued relationship with the U.S and building it up from all sectors from economic trade and especially security and defense.

TWO MORE WORKERS FROM YANGORU- SAUSSIA HEAD TO AUSTRALIA TWO MORE WORKERS FROM YANGORU- SAUSSIA HEAD TO AUSTRALIA
Two more workers from Yangoru-Saussia District in the East Sepik Province will be travelling to Australia on Tuesday for the Labour Mobility Program. Cletus Markus and Makis Urasimbie have been selected to work in Australia as carpenters under 4-year contracts. They will join Bradley Kako who went ahead of them in January to work in a banana plantation, bringing the total number of workers from Yangoru-Saussia to three. Only three were selected from the 70 candidates from the district who applied. The Minister for International Trade and Investment & Yangoru-Saussia MP Richard Maru, said Employers in Australia decide who they want to recruit. “We don’t have a say on who gets employed. We are only facilitating the processes involved and to make sure applicants from our district meet all the requirements. Those who apply are in an open market with the rest of the country and the Pacific. The employment of three of our applicants is a breakthrough for Yangoru-Saussia District. We will work to assist the others so that more Yangoru-Saussia applicants can secure employment in Australia this year,” Minister Maru said. He encouraged the three youths from his district to be disciplined, well mannered, hygienic, to be smart and productive, and to do a good job as they would be representing their families, communities, district, province and Papua New Guinea out there. “You are pioneers from our district. Do not do things that will destroy the future for others who wish to join you there. Your behavior will determine whether the employers in Australia will recruit other Papua New Guineans in the future, or they will go for other Pacific Island countries. “Also use the opportunity to upgrade yourself. Save money, attend night classes if you have to and improve yourself and make yourself more marketable so you can be employed anywhere in Australia after your contract ends. You have to think and plan beyond four years,” added Minister Maru.

K200M INVESTEMENT, A RESULT OF STRONG LEADERSHIP & TAX DICIPLINE K200M INVESTEMENT, A RESULT OF STRONG LEADERSHIP & TAX DICIPLINE
The Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) has commended Tininga Group and Steamships Trading Company for setting a high benchmark in corporate responsibility and tax compliance, as the two companies launched the K200 million Dobel Central Project in Mt Hagen. Delivering a statement at the launch, the IRC Commissioner General Sam Koim described the milestone as more than just a commercial venture—it is a clear example of how good governance, policy certainty, and tax discipline attract genuine private investment. “Tininga and Steamships stand apart; they are growing their businesses while remaining fully compliant taxpayers. That is the kind of corporate integrity we want to see—businesses that succeed without evading their obligations,” Commissioner Koim said. He contrasted their example with other businesses operating in the country that, despite visible market expansion, continue to underreport income and avoid full tax compliance. “Some businesses are expanding aggressively, yet their tax filings and payments do not reflect that growth. They carry weight in the market but claim to be ‘on a diet’ in their tax declarations to the tax office.” Importantly, the K200 million Dobel Central investment was made without any tax holiday or special incentive,” Mr. Koim said. Mr. Koim said this sends a strong message that the fundamentals—such as law and order, functioning infrastructure, and a stable policy environment—are more critical to attracting investors than tax reliefs. “This investment was made without a tax holiday. That is significant. It proves that investors respond more to good governance, infrastructure, law and order, and policy certainty than to tax giveaways,” he said. Mr. Koim used the occasion to reaffirm the importance of the social contract—the principle that taxpayers contribute, in good faith, expecting the government to use their tax kina wisely to build infrastructure and improve services. “What we are witnessing in the Western Highlands is proof of this—effective, multi-level leadership delivering results and earning the trust of business,” he said. He credited the province’s positive investment climate to the stable and collaborative leadership of Governor Wai Rapa, Minister William Duma, and the Mt Hagen City Authority, supported by national road infrastructure investments under Prime Minister James Marape. As the Dobel Central project takes shape, Mr. Koim reaffirmed IRC’s commitment to recognizing and supporting compliant businesses that contribute meaningfully to national growth. “We commend Tininga and Steamships for their example. May their investment be successful and may it inspire others to do business the right way,” he added.

ANZAC DAY ANZAC DAY
The name ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and in 1915, these soldiers landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey, hoping to capture the Dardanelles Strait and open a way to the Ottoman capital, Constantinople. In Papua New Guinea, the ANZAC Day is no longer a public holiday, but special memorial services are still held every year on April 25th to commemorate the contribution of the ANZACs to our nation's history. The ANZAC Day Dawn Service held every year on April 25th at the Bomana War Cemetery is Papua New Guinea’s biggest dedication service to honor the ANZACs and the local militia and civilians serving Allied Forces during the World Wars. The ANZAC Dawn service begins at about 4:30am to observe the day and remember those that have fallen and to reflect on the sacrifices of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women, extending remembrance activities from the Netherlands and the Maldives to Papua New Guinea and the United States. Papua New Guinea’s relationship with Australia and New Zealand extends to the colonial era, World War I and World War II. The most memorable being World War II, when numerous battles raged across PNG-from Kokoda-Track to Rabaul. Many Papua New Guinean’s served as service men and women, as well as helpers assisting the allied forces, especially the legendary ANZACs (Australian & New Zealand defense forces). During the service Port Moresby Sub-Branch of the Returned Services League (RSL) President Glenn Maitland LM stated that 110 years ago, this morning young men from two young countries sat on ships seaward of a jagged and rocky coastline, not knowing that their deeds on that day and ensuring 8 months would start a legacy that would live on four generation.

PNG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PNG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Papua New Guinea (PNG) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development. PNG is a participant at the 81st session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), held from April 21 to 25, 2025, at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. On Day 2 of the sessions, Koney Samuel, Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM) delivered PNG’s Country Statement on Agenda item 3: “Regional Cooperation for Resilient and Sustainable Urban Development in Asia and the Pacific”. Mr. Samuel highlighted the rapid demographic and urban transitions in PNG, with a population growth rate of 4.8 percent per annum—one of the highest in the region. “This unprecedented growth rate has contributed to rapid urbanization. We have seen a significant proportion of our population migrating from rural areas to urban centres in search of better socio-economic opportunities. This presents both challenges and opportunities in our efforts to create inclusive sustainable cities, and climate resilient infrastructure to support our diverse communities,” Mr. Samuel explained. To address these challenges, Mr. Samuel outlined several key national policy frameworks, including the National Urbanization Policy 2010–2030 and the newly formulated National Housing Policy 2024–2034. These initiatives aim to promote sustainable city planning, equitable access to housing, and climate-resilient infrastructure. As the country approaches its 50th year of independence Secretary Samuel reaffirmed PNG’s long-term development aspirations. “The Vision 2050 aspires for Papua New Guinea to be a developed country by 2050. Our Government launched the Medium-Term Development Plan IV (2023–2027) with clear sectoral indicators and targets to progress our overarching Vision 2050 and also our commitment to the 2030 Agenda on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said. Mr. Samuel also acknowledged the country’s rich natural resources, which, if sustainably managed, can be translated into tangible assets that serve current and future generations. PNG's involvement in the 81st ESCAP session is crucial for addressing its urban development challenges, aligning with global sustainability goals, and fostering regional collaboration to build resilient and inclusive cities. Secretary Samuel also extended PNG’s appreciation to development partners and regional organizations, particularly ESCAP, for their continued support in preparing PNG’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report. PNG will present this 2nd VNR at the High-Level Political Forum in New York in July this year, highlighting the country’s progress of implementation of the SDGs.

PM MARAPE CALLS FOR FREE & FAIR ELECTIONS PM MARAPE CALLS FOR FREE & FAIR ELECTIONS
Prime Minister (PM) James Marape has appealed to all citizens to uphold peace, fairness, and integrity in the upcoming Local-level Government (LLG) elections, Bougainville elections, and National Parliamentary byelections, urging voters and candidates alike to conduct themselves responsibly as the democratic process begins. “This is a time when our nation is under various pressures and tensions, but we must rise above and approach these elections with maturity. The LLG elections represent the level of government closest to our people. These are your communities, your wards, and your leaders. I appeal to everyone: nominate peacefully, campaign peacefully, and assist lawfully in the counting and declaration process,” PM Marape said. The Prime Minister urged voters to assess candidates based not on tribal affiliation but on merit and proven ability to lead in their communities. “Don’t be swayed by inducements, intimidation, or coercion. We must vote not just for 'wantokism' but for true leadership—those who have demonstrated maturity and capability in holding communities together. “Ward leaders and LLG presidents are the foundation of our democratic system. National and provincial leadership is built upon this bedrock,” he said. PM Marape stressed that in every election, the principal participants are not the candidates but the voters. “It is you, the voters—those aged 18 and above—who have the God-given free will to choose your leaders. Use that freedom to elect those of good character and conscience,” he said. PM Marape confirmed he has instructed the Police Commissioner to be on standby to monitor and intervene in any cases of illegal election practices. He warned against threats, bribery, coercion, and violence during the election period. “As we approach our nation’s 50th anniversary, let us show the world we are capable of mature democratic practice. This must be a moment where voters choose on merit, not manipulation,” PM Marape said. He also announced the national government will continue to support the Electoral Commission, and he has directed all provincial governments and districts to assist with manpower and resources as needed. “I have also instructed the Minister for Public Service to issue a circular through the Secretary for Department of Personnel Management, calling on public servants to volunteer their time and service to assist with the delivery of LLG elections,” Prime Minister Marape added. Turning to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, PM Marape acknowledged the importance of its upcoming election in the context of the Bougainville Peace Agreement and post-referendum dialogue. “We stand ready to support the Bougainville Government and Electoral Commission to ensure a peaceful and credible election that will bring in the next leadership to guide the region forward,” he said. PM Marape also confirmed that six of seven vacant National Parliament seats will be contested in upcoming by-elections, and he used the occasion to call on political opponents and aspiring leaders to take part in the democratic process. “There are those who constantly criticize the government on social media. Instead of fueling anger and division online, this is your chance to step up—nominate, endorse a candidate, and participate in the elections. That is how democracy works,” he said. PM Marape said Pangu Pati will be fielding candidates in some of the open seats but welcomed strong campaigns from opposition parties. “This is the time and space for political contest. If the people want a change, they will show it at the ballot box. We will ensure a level playing field for all candidates and parties. As always, it is the people who hold the ultimate power,” he said.
