The National Rugby League (NRL) in Papua New Guinea, in partnership with the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL), the Australian Government through Team Up, and the PNG-Australia Partnership, hosted a special event today at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in celebration of International Women’s Day. Under the 2025 theme, “Accelerating Action”, the event focused on empowering young girls through sports and life skills. One hundred female students from ten selected schools in Port Moresby participated in a day filled with learning, mentorship, and fun rugby-related activities. Inspiring Keynote Address was the notable guest speaker, Ms. Della Audama, one of the pioneering PNG Orchids players from 2017 and now the PNGRFL High-Performance Female Coordinator, shared her journey in rugby league and encouraged the girls to embrace opportunities in sports and beyond. Skill-Based Activities – Participants engaged in structured drills designed to teach not only rugby league basics but also essential life values such as teamwork, leadership, and confidence. Power Meri Screening – The girls watched Power Meri, a documentary showcasing the struggles and triumphs of PNG’s female rugby players, followed by discussions on women’s empowerment in sports. Celebratory Cake Cutting – The event concluded with the symbolic cutting of the International Women’s Day cake and a token of appreciation to the schools, with each receiving two rugby league balls to promote the sport among students. Speaking on the event’s purpose, PNG NRL Lead Games Development Officer, Lancy Laki, emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for young girls to explore their potential in sports. “This event is about more than just rugby league." "It’s about showing these young girls that they belong, that they have a voice, and that they are capable of achieving greatness—just like their male counterparts,” Laki said. Over the years, the NRL in PNG has seen increasing support for female participation in sports, with more teachers, fathers, and male students attending and encouraging the girls. While the event focused on fun learning experiences rather than competitive matches, it reinforced the message that girls have a place in rugby league and all areas of life. Funded through the Australian Government’s Team Up initiative, PNG NRL has been running sports-for-development programs since 2013, using rugby league as a tool to teach values and promote gender equality. With continued backing from PNGRFL, Team Up, and the PNG-Australia Partnership, the initiative aims to expand its reach and inspire more young girls to break barriers in sports and leadership.

MAY HASOLA REFLECTS ON HER JOURNEY IN MISS PACIFIC ISLANDS PAGEANT MAY HASOLA REFLECTS ON HER JOURNEY IN MISS PACIFIC ISLANDS PAGEANT
The Young Professionals Women’s Network (YPWN) Orientation and Partnership Launch was not only a celebration of new beginnings but also a moment of inspiration as Miss Bird of Paradise 2024-2025, May Hasola, took center stage for an engaging Q&A session. The audience, filled with eager students to learn more about her journey, asked her questions that delved deep into her motivation, challenges, and aspirations following her participation in the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant last month. With humility and gratitude, May opened the session by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land, and expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to speak to a room filled with strong and resilient professionals. Then came the standout moment of Q&A session when a young woman from among the UPNG attendee's student asked May. “What lessons have you brought back from the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant to inspire young women in PNG?” In response, she emphasized the strength and importance of PNG women in nation-building. "One thing I've learned is that Papua New Guinea, especially our women, are very powerful and instrumental in building our country," May responded and then shared, "I am bringing back that empowerment—to remind young women that they are essential in shaping our nation’s future." This followed by a question to May by another eager attendees who asked, “What was your biggest challenge that you’ve faced during the competition and how did you overcome that challenge?” May admitted that initially she was nervous as being one of the youngest contestants, she feared how she would be perceived, but however, found her strength from the overwhelming support from Papua New Guineans. "Knowing that I had the largest island in the Pacific backing me up was my strength," she responded confidently and then continued by saying, "When I walked onto that stage, I was not just as May Hasola, but as the proud representative of PNG and that gave me confidence I needed." In a thought-provoking exchange, an audience member asked May how she maintains patriotism, especially in the face of the challenges PNG’s youth face—unemployment, education struggles, and economic difficulties. Before responding she acknowledged the hardships but highlighted the unity of the people as PNG’s greatest strength. "Even though we face many challenges, our unity keeps us together because as we celebrate the 50 years of independence, we need that unity now more than ever and instead of blaming our leaders, let’s ask ourselves this, WHAT ARE WE DOING TO EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITIES?" May’s words resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the importance of resilience, self-belief and collective progress, with her journey to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant not just about personal success but about carrying the hopes and dreams of Papua New Guinea onto the international stage. As the session concluded, the room erupted in applause with May Hasola’s words served as a powerful reminder that no matter the challenges, the strength to rise, inspire, and lead lies within each of us. Her unwavering determination and belief in her people left an undeniable impact, proving that true leadership is not about titles but about lifting others and paving the way for the future generations.

PNG YPWN ORIENTATION & PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHED PNG YPWN ORIENTATION & PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHED
Last night, the Papua New Guinea Young Professional Women’s Network (PNG YPWN), in collaboration with sponsor CPL Group, officially launched a three-year partnership with DFM Model Agency at the University of Papua New Guinea’s (UPNG) New Lecture Theatre. The event was themed “Strength in Adversity: Empowering Women.” PNG YPWN is an association focused on supporting emerging professional women studying at UPNG across various fields by providing a platform for young professional women to exchange ideas and seek mentorship from experienced women in their respective areas of expertise. The event brought together university representatives, provincial and district student leaders, and distinguished guests to celebrate resilience and empowerment among women. Among the notable attendees was UPNG Female Vice- President Florence Pill, who addressed the audience with a powerful message about the strength of women throughout history. “If you look at Esther, Deborah, Rahab, and Ruth in the Bible, each of them was just one woman who made a difference. Likewise, every woman here has the power to change the world,” Florence stated. She emphasized the importance of mindset, values, and self-worth, urging young women to recognize their potential. Highlighting the critical role of mental strength, she added, “Your mind is the most important part of your body. It controls your actions, your studies, and your future. What you feed your mind determines your success.” The event’s keynote speaker was Miss Bird of Paradise, May Hasola, who spoke passionately about resilience and the strength of women. “Resilience is not just an individual trait; it defines us as a nation. As women, we carry resilience in our hearts. It is an honor to stand before such a gathering of strong and determined individuals,” Hasola remarked. She acknowledged the traditional custodians of the land, the Motu and Koitabu people, and paid tribute to their enduring connection to the land. The event was hosted by Shivonnie Sakme, Founder and Executive Director of PNG YPWN, who reflected on her personal journey and the challenges faced by Papua New Guinean women. “I am a proud Papua New Guinean. I have felt the hurt and struggles that our women endure. Resilience, courage, and perseverance are what drive us forward. It takes tears and challenges, but we must push through for the next generation,” Sakme expressed emotionally. She stressed the importance of education and collaboration, emphasizing that the progress of Papua New Guinea depends on unity and shared responsibility. “The advancement of PNG lies in our hands. Our forefathers built this nation with resilience, and now it is up to us to carry that legacy forward. We must coexist and work together—not in competition, but in collaboration,” she urged. The launch of this partnership marks a significant milestone for PNG YPWN, CPL Group, and DFM Model Agency, as they commit to fostering leadership, professional development, and empowerment for women in PNG over the next three years. The evening concluded with an atmosphere of inspiration and solidarity, reinforcing the message that women in Papua New Guinea are not just participants in society but leaders shaping the future.

TWL DIRECTOR ACKNOWLEDGES FAMILIES OF FALLEN OFFICERS TWL DIRECTOR ACKNOWLEDGES FAMILIES OF FALLEN OFFICERS
Mr. Larry Andagali, the Managing Director of TWL Group, has expressed deep gratitude to the families of the fallen police officers from Eastern Highlands, Southern Highlands, and Hela Provinces. Recognizing their strength in choosing peace despite their grief, Andagali stated, "Your strength and resilience honor the memory of your loved ones and serve as a beacon of hope for our nation." The Highlands Highway, stretching around 700 kilometers, plays a critical role in Papua New Guinea’s economic stability and it serves as a key link between Lae and the Highlands, enabling the movement of goods that sustain businesses and communities. However, ongoing lawlessness and deteriorating road conditions have made transportation increasingly dangerous for trucking companies and drivers. Many within the industry face the constant risk of robbery, assault, and even roadblocks that disrupt operations. A trucking company previously reported that they have been subjected to threats, including hijackings, physical violence, and the destruction of vehicles. Recent incidents along the highway have only worsened these concerns and back in January, a police unit consisting of four officers and three civilians was ambushed near Mendi in the Southern Highlands. The attack resulted in the death of Constable Noel Biape, while others sustained serious injuries. Another officer, Constable Harry Gorano, who had been in a coma for three weeks due to injuries from the same attack, tragically passed away. Following this, Gorano’s relatives staged a roadblock near Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, to demand justice for his killing. The blockade, which affected the flow of traffic, was a reflection of growing frustrations over unresolved criminal cases and the community’s demand for accountability. The Road Transport Association has voiced similar concerns, calling for urgent action to improve security measures along the highway. The association has emphasized that these challenges directly affect trucking businesses, which are essential for keeping the country’s economy running smoothly. With continuous disruptions and heightened risks, the industry is struggling to operate efficiently. Mr. Andagali stressed that achieving lasting peace and stability is a responsibility that falls on the people of Papua New Guinea. "It is imperative to recognize that no external force can dictate how we live in peace and harmony. The responsibility lies within us, the people of Papua New Guinea, to find our place in society and co-exist peacefully." He closed with a powerful message, calling for divine guidance in these trying times. "May our God, Datagaliwabe, continue to bless us and guide us toward a future filled with peace, prosperity, and unity." His words serve as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the collective effort needed to ensure safety, stability, and progress for the people of Papua New Guinea.

Forensic procedures, including fingerprinting and DNA testing, have been conducted to establish their involvement. This brings the total number of arrests to twelve, following the earlier capture of three suspects. NUTRITION TRAINING FOR ALL 50 BUK BILONG PIKININI TEACHERS NUTRITION TRAINING FOR ALL 50 BUK BILONG PIKININI TEACHERS
All 50 Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) teachers delivering in Early Childhood Education have undergone specialized training in Nutrition Education. This program will be implemented across all Library Learning Centres this year to improve learning and health outcomes. PNG faces an alarming child malnutrition crisis, with nearly 45% of children stunted and 28% underweight, according to a recent World Bank report. Stunting severely impacts cognitive development, and PNG ranks fourth globally for child stunting rates, showing no significant improvement in the last decade. To tackle this, BbP launched a Nutrition Education program in 2024, integrating it into the Early Childhood Education curriculum while also raising parental awareness about healthy diets for children. The training highlighted the direct impact of diet on students' concentration and classroom behavior. Teachers noted that children who had nutritious breakfasts like kaukau, rice with tinned fish, eggs, or bananas performed significantly better than those consuming ultra-processed, high-sugar foods. The latter group struggled with focus, exhibited disruptive behavior, and often lacked energy for learning. Recognizing the importance of proper nutrition in education, BbP has partnered with Sanitarium, Market 2000, and the Australian Export Consortia to trial a breakfast program measuring the impact of fiber-rich meals on student learning. Tarin McManus, PNG National Sales and Marketing Manager for Australian Export Consortia, emphasized their commitment to supporting BbP’s mission in ensuring students start their day with nutritious meals. BbP also aims to foster nutritional literacy among students and parents through educational resources with a 2024-published picture book, "Superheroes Tru & Kai Unlock the Secret Powers of Superfoods," and the "Papua New Guinea Nutrition Guide & Activity Book" were developed in collaboration with Trukai Industries. Peggy Loa Maha, Marketing Manager for Trukai Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about teachers using these materials to enhance nutrition education in PNG.

SOMARE LEGACY HONOURED IN FOOTBALL BID FOR OFC PRO TEAM SOMARE LEGACY HONOURED IN FOOTBALL BID FOR OFC PRO TEAM
Today marks the 4th Anniversary of the passing of Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, a defining figure in Papua New Guinea’s journey to nationhood. As the country remembers his legacy, we take this opportunity to honour his vision by advancing a new chapter in our national progress—a bid to establish a Professional Football team in the Oceania Professional League (OFC). This initiative, led by the National Capital District (NCD), symbolizes the continuation of the Grand Chief’s unwavering belief in the potential of Papua New Guineans. The bid was deliberately submitted on this significant date to pay tribute to the leader who foresaw a future where the nation would thrive independently. Grand Chief Somare’s words at the dawn of independence still resonate today. For when questioned about the country’s future without experienced professionals, Grand Chief had confidently stated, “My economists, engineers, doctors, accountants, and lawyers are still in their mothers’ wombs.” “They will be born after independence, and they will run and manage the country.” This same belief in the potential of our people now extends into sports, where Papua New Guinea is ready to compete on an international stage. Governor of NCD Powes Parkop, emphasized that this bid is more than just about football because it is about carrying forward Somare’s vision of national excellence. “We are not just celebrating his life; we are ensuring his dreams live on.” “We believe in a future where Papua New Guinea excels not only in governance and development but also in sports.” The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has set February 28, 2025, as the deadline for bids. However, to honour Grand Chief Somare’s legacy, the Port Moresby City FC bid was officially submitted today. If granted a license, the team aims to be a formidable force in regional football, bringing national pride and international recognition to the country.
