A man wanted for willful murder has finally surrendered to Madang police after escaping from custody and hiding for some time. Mr. Jerrord Manasai, also known as Comens, turned himself in to the Madang Transnational Crimes Unit on Monday March 31st, 2025. Madang Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim confirmed the surrender, stating that Mr. Manasai had been on the police wanted list for almost for some time. “He was involved in a 2019 murder case and later escaped from custody in 2024,” Baim said. “His surrender brings relief to police and the community.” Manasai, 29, was accused of killing David Sole at Wagol Pikus. He was among three suspects arrested and detained at Beon Correctional Institution before escaping on April 4, 2024. One suspect, Isaack Jack (Iceman), was killed in 2020, while another, Jeremiah George (Maia), had already surrendered. Baim said Manasai’s surrender was due to pressure from police, community leaders, and his family. “He realized there was no way out,” Baim said. “We thank those who helped in getting him to surrender.” Manasai remains in police custody and will be charged with murder and escaping from custody. Baim also encouraged other fugitives who are still on the run to turn themselves in. “It’s better to surrender and face the law than to keep running,” he said.

Police in Menyamya District of Morobe province have busted a major drug trade, seizing 47kg of marijuana and arresting six suspects in a targeted operation. The illegal drugs are estimated to be worth between K40,000 and K50,000 on the streets. The suspects were caught on March 30th when police intercepted a vehicle carrying 12 bags of marijuana. The six men, all from Hanjua Village, had been under police surveillance for weeks. Menyamya Acting Police Station Commander, Sergeant George Gambu, said the operation was a major success in the fight against drugs. “This is a big win for us,” he said. “We are committed to stopping drugs from destroying our communities.” He also stressed the importance of cooperation between police and the public. “We need the community’s help to fight drug-related crimes,” he said. “If you see or hear anything suspicious, report it to us.” Authorities believe the drugs were destined for major urban centers like Port Moresby and Kerema. Madang police have removed an unexploded bomb found outside Lae Builders Company (LBC) following an attempted arson. Unknown individuals placed the bomb inside three car tires piled up on each other and tried to ignite it in the early hours of April 1, 2025. A security guard and a local resident spotted smoke around 6:00am, extinguished the fire, and alerted authorities. Madang Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, said the device could have caused major destruction. “If it had exploded, it could have damaged buildings and injured people,” Baim said. The PNG Defense Force (PNGDF) safely removed the old-World War Two 105mm high-explosive projectile and disposed of it 25 kilometers out at sea. Police have identified suspects and warned they will be arrested under the Counter-Terrorism Act. “Madang is too small to hide. Surrender now,” Baim warned. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity.

Popular PNG musician Daniel Bilip is facing a tough battle with tongue cancer, a disease that has changed his life. It all started with a sore on his tongue that lasted for over three months. After a long wait for test results, Daniel was diagnosed with cancer in January. "I never thought it was cancer, just thought it was from chewing betel nut and smoking," Daniel said. "It’s been hard for me, as a musician, to accept this." Since the diagnosis, Daniel has been going through chemotherapy, which makes it painful for him to eat and hard to keep up with daily routines. Losing his voice has been especially difficult for him. Doctors suggest Daniel get a specific kind of treatment called Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), but this treatment is not available in PNG. The only option here is a less effective therapy, which has lower chances of success. His doctors recommend that he seek treatment abroad, but the cost is extremely high. "Times are tough, and I cannot afford the treatment by myself," Daniel shared. "I’m asking for help from the government, NGOs, or anyone who can contribute. Every bit of help counts." Beyond his own fight, Daniel hopes that PNG will improve its healthcare system, so others won’t have to leave the country for necessary treatments. "PNG can improve its healthcare system," he said. "If we invest in better cancer care, we can save lives here at home." Daniel’s message to others: “If you feel sick, don’t wait too long to see a doctor. Two men have been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a violent confrontation at the DCA Compound in Madang on March 13th left a local man with severe injuries. The suspects, Jonathan Noie (30) and Samuel Noie (25), both from the Yakamul village in Aitape, West Sepik Province, allegedly attacked Michael Yani, a resident of Ward 18, Madang Urban. Police reports the altercation began after Yani’s children informed him that Samuel Noie, who was allegedly intoxicated, had been swearing and dragging a bush knife along their fence. When Yani confronted the suspect, an argument broke out, leading to a violent attack. Samuel Noie allegedly threw his bush knife at Yani but missed. As Yani attempted to chase him, Jonathan Noie reportedly picked up the weapon and struck Yani on the head and ear. Yani, realizing he was outnumbered, retreated to his home, but the two suspects followed him and continued the assault, slashing his arms, back, and wrist. The case was reported to police, and the two suspects were detained at Jomba Police Station. They were formally arrested and charged with Attempted Murder under Section 304 of the PNG Criminal Code Act, Chapter 262. Madang Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, confirmed the arrests and said police are treating the matter seriously. “This was a brutal attack that could have easily turned fatal. We will ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law. I commend my officers for their swift response in apprehending the suspects,” Baim said. Nineteen (19) escapees are still at large in the Morobe province following a daring escape from a police station in the city of Lae, the country's industrial hub. Initially, twenty (20) inmates escaped from the Lae Central Police Station cell this week after cutting through a wire barrier using a smuggled axel. Authorities have since recaptured one escapee near the oil market downtown, while 19 remain at large. Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban confirmed the breakout and suggested that the escape was probably planned over some time. “The axel was smuggled into the cell and used to cut through the wire barriers. It was not a one-night job—it took time before they made their move,” Kunyanban said. He added that the breakout occurred between midnight and 2 p.m., during a shift change. “Our officers were on duty, but cell checks are conducted at two-hour intervals. The inmates knew the routine and used that window to escape,” he explained. Kunyanban also raised concerns about the overcrowded and outdated detention facility, a cause for concern for police as it poses risks of disease outbreaks and breakouts. “The cells were originally built to hold around 60 to 70 detainees, but we now house more than 100 at a time. It’s clear that we need better infrastructure to prevent such incidents,” he said. Police are verifying the names and charges of the escapees before releasing further details. Kunyanban has urged the public to assist in locating the fugitives, emphasizing that their recapture is a matter of public safety. To overcome this, he said the club has maintained arrangements where recipients organize their own transport, ensuring that donations reach their intended destinations. “It’s a partnership between us and the recipients. We provide the resources, but they need to take responsibility for transportation,” he said. Despite these difficulties, the club remains committed to its mission and continues to assess the impact of its past projects. “We have received feedback from recipients on how our projects have helped them. We revisit schools to see how our assistance, such as desks, has benefited students,” Banchetti said. He added that while transportation challenges persist, the club is always looking for ways to improve logistics and expand its reach.

The Lae District Netball Association (LDNA) has successfully concluded its preseason games, setting the stage for the upcoming 2025 season. Ten survivors of a recent sea ordeal near Tabalip Point, Rai Coast, are in desperate need of food, fuel, and transportation as they recover and prepare to return home. The Madang Rapid Response Network (MRRN) is calling on the public, businesses, and government authorities to step in and provide urgent support. MRRN Director John Newton Ariku said the survivors lost everything at sea and require immediate assistance. “These people have gone through a traumatic experience and now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives. They need food, fuel, and logistical support to return home safely.” Although clothing donations on Sunday and Monday have provided some relief, food supplies remain critically low, leaving the survivors in urgent need of daily meals. Four survivors, including the boat owner, have undergone trauma counseling, with additional sessions planned. A mother and her one-year-old infant, who were previously admitted to Modilon General Hospital’s Ward 4, left due to a lack of a guardian and basic necessities and are now staying with relatives. The boat engine has been repaired, but the group still requires zoom fuel to complete their journey home to Saidor Station. MRRN’s response vehicle also needs diesel to continue transporting survivors for medical check-ups, counseling, and other logistical needs. Ariku said MRRN has been providing as much assistance as possible, but further support is essential. He called on the Rai Coast District Administration, Madang Provincial Government, and other authorities to take immediate action. “We cannot do this alone. These survivors need food, clean water, and fuel for their journey home. Any assistance, no matter how small, will make a difference."
