NSO READY FOR 2024 NATIONAL CENSUS WITH NEW TABLETS NSO READY FOR 2024 NATIONAL CENSUS WITH NEW TABLETS
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Popondetta Open, Richard Masere, who is also the Minister responsible for the National Statistics Office (NSO), announced at a media conference yesterday that preparations for the 2024 National Census are well underway. Minister Masere was joined by National Statistician, Mr. John Igitoi and a representative from Max Industrials, the company contracted to supply the tablet computers essential for data collection during the census. Minister Masere emphasized the significance of the upcoming census, which occurs once every ten years. "The progress of the National Census is well, truly into its advanced stages," he stated, ensuring the public that the preparations are on track and in good order. A key highlight was the announcement of the delivery of 8, 000 tablet computers, with an additional 14, 000 to arrive soon. These tablets, airlifted from Hong Kong, will be used by enumerators to collect data across the country's 22 provinces from June 17th to June 30th. The minister highlighted the logistical support sought from the Australian High Commission to ensure smooth distribution. Minister Masere acknowledged the delay in conducting the census, initially planned for 2021 but postponed due to COVID-19 and other issues. He reassured the public, "We are now ready to deliver the Census after a 13-year wait," emphasizing the importance of accurate data for national planning and development. The National Statistician, Mr. John Igitoi, also provided details on the census operations, noting the importance of the new tablets in enhancing data collection efficiency. "These tablets will cut down the statistical processing time significantly and provide quality information with on-field data checks," said Mr. Igitoi. He also mentioned that the tablets are part of a broader government initiative to digitize information. Mr. Igitoi also addressed the financial aspects and the support from various government bodies. Despite some delays in the procurement process, the supplier, Max Industrials, proceeded with the orders in good faith. "The government had released so far K80 million," Mr. Igitoi explained, expressing gratitude to the supplier for their confidence in the government. Representing Max Industrials, the supplier explained the specifics of the tablets and accessories provided, including power banks, portable battery systems, and protective gear for the tablets. "We have ordered 1, 000 extra tablets to support any technical needs," the supplier noted, highlighting their commitment to ensuring a smooth census process. Minister Masere also emphasized the importance of the census data in national planning. He stated, "Once we provide the data, the country will be able to reset and take on the challenges going forward," referring to the adjustments needed in various sectors based on the updated population numbers. In closing, Mr. Igitoi reiterated the importance of the census, describing it as a crucial event for understanding the population dynamics and planning for future needs. "NSO is prepared from the 17th to the 30th of June," he affirmed, thanking all involved parties for their support and collaboration.

GTFS FUNDING DELAYS MAY AFFECT GR10 WEX EXAM GTFS FUNDING DELAYS MAY AFFECT GR10 WEX EXAM
As the Grade 10 Written Expression (WEX) mock exams kick off this week at Tusbab Secondary School, anticipation builds for the upcoming WEX National Exams scheduled for next month. However, amidst the preparations, a pending concern threatens to disrupt the smooth conduct of examinations and that is the delay in Government Tuition Fee Subsidy (GTFS) funds. GTFS funds play a pivotal role not only in the day-to-day operations of schools but also in facilitating crucial logistics, particularly in the transportation of exam papers. With the transportation of exam papers contingent upon the availability of funds, the current delay poses a significant challenge for schools like Tusbab Secondary who will be in charge of the dissemination of exam papers. That is from Mr. Michael Kavagu, Deputy Principal of Tusbab Secondary School, in an interview this week with PNG HAUSBUNG. Mr Kavagu said, "GTFS funds play a crucial role in terms of transport and logistics in transporting exam papers." “The delay in funding jeopardizes the timely distribution of exam materials, potentially hindering the preparation and administration of exams.” Moreover, GTFS funds are essential for administering the exams themselves, covering various logistical and administrative expenses associated with the examination process. From securing exam venues to providing necessary resources and personnel, the availability of GTFS funds is crucial in ensuring the successful execution of examinations. With the national exams looming up, the uncertainty surrounding GTFS funding adds an extra layer of difficulty to an already challenging situation. School administrators are left dealing with contingency plans to ease the impact of potential disruptions. As the countdown to exam day continues, the government is urged to be prompt in organizing the funds as it will help cater a smooth written expression exam.

GTFS DELAYS IMPACTING SCHOOLS IN MADANG GTFS DELAYS IMPACTING SCHOOLS IN MADANG
Educational institutions in Madang Province, particularly Kusbau Primary school and Tusbab Secondary School, are dealing with severe funding delays that are obstructing their operational capacities and directly affecting students' learning experiences. Mrs. Biel Towili, the Deputy Principle for Kusbau Primary School, highlighted the critical situation, stating, "We haven't received the second quarter funds. It really affects the operation of the school." The delay in the release of Government Tuition Fee Subsidy (GTFS) funds has led to a shortage of essential supplies such as exercise books, papers for printing and stationeries causing disruptions in the learning process. This was also agreed by Mr. Michael Kavagu, the Deputy Principal of Tusbab Secondary School, who emphasized the disadvantageous effects of the funding delays on various aspects of school functioning, including purchasing school uniforms, books, and implementing school projects. Furthermore, Mr. Kavagu expressed concern over the impending written expression exams scheduled for June 6th, as the delay in GTFS funds may delay the distribution of examination booklets, portraying a significant challenge to schools across the province, especially those situated in remote areas like Karkar, Brahman, Malala, Ramu and Rai Coast. In addition to risking the regular operations of schools, delayed funding compromises the validity of educational assessments, which could have a significant effect on the academic careers of countless children. “In order to protect the standard of education and the prospects of students throughout Papua New Guinea, it is imperative that streamlined procedures and effective disbursement mechanisms be put in place,” said Mr. Kavagu. In response to these challenges, both Mrs. Towili and Mr. Kavagu have called upon higher authorities, including the Secretary of Education, to accelerate the release of GTFS funds to ensure the continuous running of schools and the successful administration of examinations.
