NCD GOVERNOR TO TRAVEL ON SOUTHERN AIRLINES MAIDEN FLIGHT NCD GOVERNOR TO TRAVEL ON SOUTHERN AIRLINES MAIDEN FLIGHT
The inaugural Southern Airlines Flight to Port Moresby is expected to arrive at the Jackson’s Airport in Port Moresby tomorrow, Wednesday 20th of December 2023. National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has left for Ghuanzhou via Hong Kong yesterday, to join Minister for Transport & Civil Aviation Walter Schnaubelt, to join the inaugural Flight. In a post shared on his socials before his departure, the Governor expressed that this is an initiative that they have been pushing in the city, under the global branding Amazing Port Moresby. This initiative is to promote business, investment, trade links and more importantly for tourism in Port Moresby. “I acknowledge the leadership of our Prime Minister, Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, Minister for International Trade and Investment Hon Richard Maru.” Ghuanzhou is the capital of Guandong Province. This Province is the industrial heart land of China, and its GDP is bigger than the entire Russian Federation. It has a population of 120million, and it accounts for 60 percent of the tourist from China, now the world biggest tourist market. China Southern Airlines is one of the two biggest Airlines in China and is among the top 5 in the world. It has 920 jets flying all around the world daily and it has been flying to Australia and New Zealand for quite some time now. Governor Parkop said apart from improving the trade and other links with China it is his opinion that once we have China Southern Airlines on board, we can invite them to take out at least 40 percent stake in Air Niugini while we sell 10 percent to the Super Funds. “This is the best way to recapitalize Air Niugini rather the usual passing the burden to the public to pay.” “This is a model Fiji Airlines has adopted with Qantas and New Zealand Air taking out 49 percent, making it a viable and profitable airline.” He said the goal under the Amazing Port Moresby brand is to tap on the tourist market of Guangdong and China generally. “But tourists coming to Port Moresby and on to the provinces also need a reliable domestic airline to guarantee tourist return on time to take their international connections.” “A deal with China Southern as I am proposing will be a real goer as any loss or hiccups in Air Niugini either domestic or international will not be a problem to China Airlines.” “They can underwrite any initial and occasional hiccups. It will be a real deal.” “I will be pushing for this deal and mechanism for recapitalization of Air Niugini.” “We can’t keep on doing same thing expecting a different outcome.”

MISSING LINK WILL NOW EASE TRAVEL IN POMIO DISTRICT MISSING LINK WILL NOW EASE TRAVEL IN POMIO DISTRICT
Commissioning of the 17-kilometer missing link of the Highway Corrdior of Sinivit Local Level Government in Pomio District in East New Britain Province (ENBP) was done recently. The connection of this road network should reduce travel time to just 4 hours. Over the years, the airstrips deteriorated and become non-existent, forcing the travelling public to take alternative means into the Kokopo, which were usually risky. Over the sea, the introduction of the MV Pomio back in 2021 eased the burden of travel, however, this missing link of a road, when completed, will be the easiest route to take. East New Britain Provincial Administrator commended the leadership of the district and province, as well as the host of communities along this missing link, for their cooperation and for creating a conducive environment for the project to carried out. “I also want to thank the contractor which was identified and has started working on the road,” he said. Host Pomio MP Elias Kapavore said that the construction of the Illi to Karong road is in response to a request put through to the Prime Minister, after he was invited to join the ruling PANGU Pati, following the 2022 National General Elections. “I told Prime Minister James Marape that I didn’t want a ministry, but instead asked for the connection of the missing link from Merai to Illi and then to Karong and Marunga.” “After supplying the scope of works, a funding of around K10 million was approved for the project,” he said. The Pomio MP further explained that his second request was for the national government to assist in the purchase of a new ship for the district. “The current MV Pomio goes all the way to Kandrian in West New Britain province and a lot of times when it comes back to the district, it is usually full and cannot cater for the produce from the district.” “For this request, a funding of about K8m was approved forthwith,” he said. Mr. Kapavore announced that the sequel for the district’s ship, ‘MV Pomio 2’ is expected to arrive in the province and district by next year. He said that the road project was supposed to commence at Illi but he requested that the distance be extended further back to Merai, after the river, then to Illi, all the way to Karong and then to Marunga. The road project is being aided with the installation of 2 Bailey bridges at Merai river and Kilak river, both within Sinivit LLG.

UNAFFECTED PEOPLE REQUESTED TO LEAVE WNB CARE CENTRES UNAFFECTED PEOPLE REQUESTED TO LEAVE WNB CARE CENTRES
A community leader in Bialla Town Mr. Martin Samuel has reiterated the calls of West New Britain Provincial Police Commander and the Deputy Controller of the Mt. Ulawun operations; Supt. Peter Barkie in requesting the people currently living at the care centres, with villages close by, move away. Mr Martin said some people are seeking refuge for nothing and are just occupying the care centre. Mr. Martin added people from inland Pomio and Bago villages whose villages are unaffected, although they are working in Agri Oil Palms Ltd, and they were disrupted by the eruption, they will still have to move back to their villages as their villages in inland Pomio and Bago are quite safe for them. This is to allow the Government to look at only the people at Mera Mera which is the Ulamona people, and the Noau people, Soye and Kabaya, that can be taken care of. It is estimated that a total number of people living currently in all ten care centres is about 26,000. Mr. Samuel further stated that if people can voluntarily leave it will make their job easier catering for all at the care centres.

The tournament commenced on the 10th of December and will end on the 14th of December. So far 16 clubs have registered with the association’s tournament. The teams are from within Erap zone in Wain Erap LLG.
