CLEARY TURNS REMATCH INTO A MISMATCH CLEARY TURNS REMATCH INTO A MISMATCH
After conjuring a grand final miracle to break Brisbane's heart last October, Nathan Cleary tormented the Broncos again at BlueBet Stadium on Thursday as he led the premiers to a dominant 34-12 victory. Cleary finished the night with three try assists, three line break assists and four tackle breaks while Dylan Edwards ran for 307 metres as the Panthers made it seven wins in their past eight games against Brisbane. The night started badly for the Broncos when fullback Reece Walsh was forced from the field after just four minutes following a head clash with Taylan May and was unable to return. May was placed on report for failing to lower his body height and attempt to make a tackle, with Brisbane's new kicker Kotoni Staggs landing the penalty goal for a 2-0 lead. The Panthers hit their straps in the 14th minute when Cleary sent a pinpoint long pass over the top for winger Sunia Turuva to cross wide out and make it 4-2 to the premiers. The home side then turned up the pressure and makeshift fullback Selwyn Cobbo did a fine job to defuse two grubbers to keep Brisbane's line intact before the weight of possession told and Izack Tago skipped through a Brendan Piakura tackle to score. Cleary converted for a 10-2 lead. When Mitch Kenny exploded out of dummy half and fooled Billy Walters with a dummy to grab the Panthers' third try the score had blown out to 16-2 after 25 minutes. Having had his cut stitched, Walsh returned to the sideline with 10 minutes remaining in the half but headed back up the tunnel after experiencing problems with his vision. The Broncos launched a right side raid in the 34th minute which ended with Deine Mariner trying to dive into the corner but stepping on the sideline before he took flight. A mistake by Fletcher Baker on his own 30-metre line handed the Panthers field position and Cleary made the Broncos pay when he put the ball on a platter for Tago to cross for his second. Trailing 22-2 at the break the Broncos were dealt a hammer blow when Walsh was officially ruled out for the rest of the game and the Panthers went further ahead when slick hands created space for Brian To'o to score. Come the 50th minute and To'o made it a double courtesy of a Jarome Luai long ball before the Broncos finally got on the board through Mariner, who showed some great footwork to beat three defenders, On the hour mark the Broncos produced a long-range special when Piakura found space down the left wing and sent the ball back inside to Jesse Arthars who powered through Edwards' tackle to score to get it back to 34-12. Kotoni Staggs then muscled up in defence to force an error from Liam Martin as the Broncos hung tough in the face of adversity. Source: NRL.Com

ENSURE REMANDEES RIGHT TO JUSTICE, SAYS MAGISTRATE ENSURE REMANDEES RIGHT TO JUSTICE, SAYS MAGISTRATE
Magistrate Paul Puri Nii at the Committal Court in Waigani, Port Moresby voiced concerns over administrative and logistical challenges within the Police and Correctional Services, which may affect remandees and others in custody from having their day in court. He stressed the importance of ensuring the rights of suspects in custody to attend court hearings. The magistrate's concerns surfaced in court yesterday when he queried police prosecutors about the absence of remands and other individuals in Correctional Services custody from Bomana jail, who were slated to appear in court before him in the morning. Police prosecutors cited transportation issues between Bomana and Waigani Committal Court as the primary reason for the remands delay in appearing on time in court. Upon hearing the situation, Magistrate Nii, stressed such hindrances should not impede individuals fundamental rights to participate in court proceedings. In response to the transportation challenges, Magistrate Ni proposed the possibility of conducting hearings for remands and others in Correctional Services custody at the Bomana court facilities. Also present in court when the magistrate raised the issue, were a group of trainee Police Cadet Officers from the Bomana School of Excellence, who have been attending court proceedings at the Waigani District Court this week.

RENEWABLE ENERGY UPGRADES IN ARAWA RENEWABLE ENERGY UPGRADES IN ARAWA
Residents of Arawa, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, are poised to experience enhanced access to reliable electricity with the ongoing renewable energy upgrades set to end in 2025. Leading the charge with assistance from Australia, the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) has completed these renovations, which mark the beginning of Bougainville's first commercial-scale solar farm with battery storage and the potential for revolutionary changes for the surrounding population. ABG President Ishmael Toroama and Australian High Commissioner John Feakes conducted a thorough tour of the power plant renovations to commemorate the project's halfway point. High Commissioner Feakes spoke at the event and reaffirmed Australia's steadfast commitment to supporting Bougainville's goals for economic development and upgrading its energy infrastructure. He remarked, "Australia is committed to improving access to energy in Bougainville and is supporting the ABG’s economic development and energy goals." The K18.8 million worth of renewable energy enhancements in Arawa are being carried out in two stages. The first stage entails setting up a small solar power plant at PNG Power Limited's (PPL) current power plant, which started providing Arawa with electricity in March of this year. The construction of a larger solar farm with a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system will thereafter take place in the second phase. This additional site will be acquired by PPL in 2023 with aid from the ABG. When completed, these improvements will help PPL save a great deal of money on operating expenses by reducing its reliance on pricey diesel fuel. At the same time, they will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1,800 tonnes of CO2e in the first year alone. In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, this emission decrease will make it easier to provide Arawa's residents with a more dependable and constant electricity source. High Commissioner Feakes expressed excitement for the official project unveiling in March 2025, which is anticipated to be attended by the William Duma the Minister for State Enterprises, and representatives from the ABG. This achievement represents a turning point in Arawa's transition to sustainable energy supply and highlights the joint efforts of Australian and local partners in promoting progress. Moreover, Arawa's renewable energy renovations are a crucial part of Australia's larger aid program, which fortifies provincial power plants all around Papua New Guinea. Preparations are in motion to provide comparable assistance to Buka's power plant, demonstrating Australia's persistent dedication to promoting energy sustainability and resilience throughout the country. Furthermore, PPL stands to profit greatly from ongoing operation and maintenance support as well as increased management assistance. These measures will help to guarantee the effectiveness and longevity of the recently created electrification infrastructure.

USAID TEAMS UP WITH MOROBE LOCALS IN COCOA FARMING USAID TEAMS UP WITH MOROBE LOCALS IN COCOA FARMING
A thorough Farmer Training Needs Assessment (FTNA) was recently carried out in the Wafi Golpu Area of Morobe province by USAID's PNG Sustainable Landscapes (PNGSL) Program in an effort to support sustainable agricultural methods and increase cocoa production. The week-long study, which sought to pinpoint important areas for support and development in cocoa cultivation, drew responses from over 50 cocoa producers. With assistance from the Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture, the Babuaf Farmers' Cooperative Society (BFCS) oversaw the evaluation, which was one of several meetings with farmers, stakeholders, and the local community. The survey, which had cocoa farming as its main focus, aimed to identify farmer needs, sustainable land use practices, training needs, and opportunities for capacity building in order to improve cocoa quality, raise yields, and make it easier for farmers to access possible market chains. The Babuaf Farmers' Cooperative Society was established in 2017 and has been instrumental in enabling registered farmers to grow cocoa trees, gather produce, and sell to BFCS. Some farmers have also shipped their dried cocoa beans to Lae in order to sell them further. The Deputy Chairman of BFCS, Mr. Steven Jadah Utin highlighted the important role that Babuaf cocoa farmers may play in helping to build a chocolate factory. He emphasized the significance of solid partnerships in boosting farmers' value and empowering them to increase cocoa production and improve their standard of living through thorough training, enhanced knowledge and ability, and sustainable land management practices. Ms. Maureen Thomas, the Private Sector Engagement Specialist, spoke on behalf of PNGSL and praised the farmers' perseverance in growing cocoa. She emphasized the need for focused assistance to deal with particular issues and leverage farmers' current efforts, such as facilitating market access, implementing sustainable land use techniques, and providing specialized training programs. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded PNG Sustainable Landscapes program, run by Palladium, supports conservation, sustainable land use, natural resource management, and greenhouse gas reduction goals set forth by the Papua New Guinean government. The results of the FTNA survey are anticipated to guide targeted initiatives meant to improve cocoa farming methods, encourage local farmers' economic empowerment, and advance sustainable development in the Morobe province.
