FIVE MEN ARRESTED FOR OBSTRUCTING POLICE DUTIES
Five men from Enga Province have been arrested and formally charged for threatening, obstructing, and assaulting police officers while they were attending to a complaint in Hohola, Port Moresby. The Commander of the National Capital District and Central Provinces, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Turi, confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday while police officers from Hohola Police Station were responding to a report made by a woman concerning a land dispute.Commander Turi explained that police were called to a residence in Hohola Five, where several men were allegedly attempting to forcibly remove a deceased manâs wife and children from the property in order to claim ownership of the land. Police attended the scene to address the complaint and mediate the situation.During police intervention, one of the suspects, who had flown in from Enga Province, became aggressive toward the officers. The situation escalated when the man physically assaulted a senior police officer by tearing off his uniform and fighting with other officers who were present at the scene.Commander Turi said police used reasonable force to restrain the suspect and took him into custody at Hohola Police Station, where he was detained.Following his detention, four other men arrived at the police station demanding his release. Commander Turi explained that the group confronted the officer-in-charge, argued with him, issued threats, and continued insisting that the detained suspect be released. When their behavior persisted, police arrested the four men and placed them in custody. The five men were later formally charged with various offenses and detained to appear in court once their files are finalized.Addressing the seriousness of the incident, Commander Turi emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated under his command.âThe actions of the men are totally unacceptable in my command. Tearing the uniforms of the police officers while performing their duty is very serious; even arguing with on-duty police officers at the police station while they are doing their job is also wrong. Port Moresby is the capital city of Papua New Guinea, and if someone is found to be disrespecting the police officers, we will deal with them accordingly,â Turi stressed.

CONTINUED INVESTMENT IN EMERGENCY MEDEVAC VITAL
Local MP Vincent Kumura says continued investment in emergency medevac services is critical for saving lives in remote areas of Usino-Bundi-Gama in the Madang province, following the successful airlift of two emergency patients this month.Kumura confirmed the district has committed K200,000 to support medevac operations, saying the service is often the only lifeline for communities with limited access to roads and medical facilities.âThese flights save lives,â Kumura said. âWithout medevac support, many of our people would not survive emergencies like this.âThe two patients were airlifted by Manalos Aviation to Chimbu Provincial Hospital, where doctors say both are now stable and receiving specialist care. One patient, Margaret Yagama, a woman in her early 20s, suffered severe complications during her first childbirth after labouring for more than 12 hours. She experienced excessive blood loss and a serious third-degree tear, requiring urgent medical attention. With no advanced care available locally, she and her newborn were evacuated to hospital, where both are now recovering. The second patient, a woman in her late 40s from Snow Pass, has a history of asthma and endured severe shortness of breath for over 24 hours. With no oxygen support available in the area, she was also flown to hospital and remains under medical supervision.Health officials say the evacuations highlight the challenges faced by remote communities, where medical emergencies can quickly become life-threatening.The operations were carried out through coordination between Manalos Aviation, hospital medical teams, the Chimbu Provincial Authority, and the district administration. For families in isolated villages, emergency flights remain a vital serviceâoften making the difference between life and death.

Lutheran Shipping has made two vessels, MV Lalibu and MV Momase, available to transport delegates from Lae and Madang to Bunsil Station in Siassi Tewai Siassi District.Dr Urame said the synod, as the churchâs highest decision-making body, will review performance reports from church executives, updates from districts, and institutional reports from Lutheran University. Reports from health, education, and other church departments will also be presented. He clarified that this synod will be held without elections, with the next electoral synod scheduled for 2028 in accordance with the church constitution.By combining safe sea transport for delegates with live-streamed sessions for the wider membership, the ELCPNG aims to make church governance accessible to everyone â particularly those in rural and hard-to-reach areas â while ensuring safety amid adverse weather conditions.
