The recent visit by the Provincial Member and Governor for Madang Province, Ramsey Pariwa, to Lalok Primary School in ward seven of Astrolabe Bay Local Level Government (LLG) in Rai Coast District has somewhat open the flood gates for a number of significant financial assistance to the school. Governor Pariwa was at Lalok Primary School last Thurday, February 12 to deliver a K20,000 cheque following a commitment he made last year during a community gathering at Lalok Village.After delivering the cheque last Thursday to the head-teacher, Sand Robin, the Governor also pledged to assist with another K30,000 to the school this year.Upon the Governor's announcement, the newly elected President of Astrolabe Bay LLG, Garry Kulonga, wasted no time in announcing a commitment of K50,000 assistance to the school.Governor Pariwa at the occasion also told the people that he has appointed Mr. Kulonga as Chairman of Education Sector in the Provincial Executive Council. The significant part of the occasion was when the Provincial Education Director, Alphonse Igag, announced an undertaking to the head-teacher, Sand Robin, that Lalok Primary School would be included in the tuition fee free (TFF) subsidy this year.Mr. Igag assured that the TFF subsidy assistance would eventuate at the second quarter of this school year. The TFF subsidy assurance drew huge applause from the crowd who gathered to welcome the Governor. Mr. Pariwa also presented a K10,000 assistance to the Lalok Sports Association.He encouraged youths to turn away from drugs, homebrews and lawlessness and turn to sports to keep themselves occupied. He even urged the youths to continue playing soccer and select a side to participate in the Governor's Cup soccer tournament where scouts would be moving around to select players to the Madang Football Club.

Health authorities in Morobe Province have reported a sharp rise in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases, starting at the end of 2025 and peaking in early January 2026.Weekly reports showed the highest number of cases in epidemic week #2, causing concern among healthcare workers and the public. Rumours circulated on WhatsApp and through word of mouth about deaths from cough and shortness of breath, but investigations found no confirmed cases. From 8–13 January 2026, samples collected from Buimo, Bulolo, Butibam, Malahang, Mutzing, Taraka and Situm Health Centres confirmed Influenza Type A with the H3N2 subtype. Out of 27 samples sent to the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR), 12 tested positive, with two more cases from medivac patients from Siassi Island. Healthcare workers reported that this H3N2 strain seemed particularly strong, leading to higher demand for medical supplies. In January alone, 15 emergency supply orders were sent out, more than in previous years. Over the past three years, influenza strains in Morobe have varied. In 2023, Type B (Victoria lineage) was detected in Salamaua. No samples were submitted in 2024. In 2025, Type A (H1N1) was found in Erap and in 2026, Type A (H3N2) was confirmed in six health facilities and on Siassi Island. The Lutheran Church Synod gathering on Siassi Island from 13–23 January 2026 showed the impact of influenza at large events. Over 436 locals and 235 church delegates were diagnosed with ILI. Five delegates developed Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) but all survived after medical care. One person with influenza-like symptoms died from pre-existing conditions. Patients received timely care at Angau Hospital and were discharged for home management after stabilization. The surge was not caused by COVID-19. Health facilities had limited medical supplies and PPE and public awareness of the seasonal nature of influenza was low. The elderly, especially those over 50, were most affected. Influenza remains a serious public health concern in Morobe. Like COVID-19, it spreads through the air and can severely affect older adults and people with existing health conditions. Authorities recommend keeping patient records to track severe cases and deaths, testing samples during each influenza surge, running ongoing public awareness programs, ensuring PPE availability, following infection control procedures at public gatherings and maintaining weekly surveillance to track trends and prepare responses. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge communities to stay aware and take preventive measures to reduce the impact of seasonal influenza.

A sum of K214 million held in a trust account was recently successfully frozen by the police in light of suspicion of corruption and money laundering.The money believed to be rightfully belonging to the people of the Western province was about to be moved into subsidiary accounts when upon intelligence, police moved in to freeze the trust account. This move by police has been commended by Prime Minister James Marape, who described the action as a major step forward in the government’s ongoing fight against corruption. The Prime Minister confirmed that police obtained a court stay order under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) to prevent the transfer of the funds. “I want to commend the police for acting swiftly and decisively. From the reports I have received, this K214 million belongs to the people of Western Province, and police have successfully stopped it from being transferred or dissipated,” Prime Minister Marape said. He said the onus is now on those holding the account to explain the source and purpose of the funds. “Police have informed me that those involved have six months to account for the money — where it came from, why it is being held, and for what purpose. If the court is not satisfied, the funds will be recovered and returned to their rightful beneficiaries,” he said. The restraint order was secured under the Proceeds of Crime Act, Papua New Guinea’s principal legislation for freezing, seizing and forfeiting assets suspected to be derived from criminal activity, including corruption and money laundering. The POCA framework allows law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to preserve suspected proceeds while investigations and court processes are ongoing, preventing funds from being concealed, transferred offshore, or dissipated. Police investigations indicate that the restrained funds were held in a professional trust account and were at risk of imminent movement into subsidiary accounts, triggering urgent action to preserve the money pending further examination. Under POCA provisions, the restraint does not determine guilt, but ensures that funds remain secured while authorities establish whether the money constitutes proceeds of crime and whether forfeiture proceedings should follow. If the court ultimately determines that the funds are state monies or proceeds of unlawful activity, the legislation provides for recovery and forfeiture to the State, with potential prosecution of individuals involved— including professionals entrusted with managing such accounts — where breaches of the law are established. Prime Minister Marape emphasized that the fight against corruption is not a one-off event, but a sustained process that requires long-term investment in law enforcement capability.

The Rookes Marine Pre-Season Tournament will officially kick off this weekend following the official draws held today at Laiwaden Oval in Madang.The draw was conducted by the General Secretary of Madang Soccer Association, John Maripal, together with representatives of Rookes Marine. Mr. Paul Rookes, representing the major sponsor, picked team names to be placed into their respective pools for both the men’s and women’s divisions.A total of 29 men’s teams has confirmed their participant and have been drawn into four pools, while nine women’s teams have also confirmed participation in this year’s tournament.Rookes Marine, the major sponsor of the competition, has supported football in the province for the past 15 years. Mr. Maripal thanked the company for its long-standing commitment, describing this year’s competition as one of the biggest ever due to the increase in team participation.“Rookes Marine has been with us for 15 years now. Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa has challenged aspiring footballers to bring Madang FC back into the national spotlight following the conclusion of the Madang FC trials at Laiwaden Oval yesterday.Governor Pariwa visited the grounds to witness the final day of trials yesterday, where selected players from the recent Governor’s Cup LLG games showcased their skills and talent in hopes of earning a spot in the Madang FC squad.Addressing the players after the trials, the Governor described the Governor’s Cup as a vital platform for rural-based players to demonstrate their football abilities.“The Governor’s Cup is a great opportunity for our rural players to show their skills and talents in football,” he said. “It is my dream to see talented young men from Madang wear the Madang FC jersey and compete at the national level.”He assured players of his continued support in rebuilding the club.“I will support to make sure we rise from where we are — from our homes, from the LLGs to the national stage — and bring Madang FC back into the field,” he said.Governor Pariwa also officially announced that the Madang Provincial Events Committee (MPEC) will serve as the interim board of Madang FC until a formal board is appointed by the Provincial Executive Council (PEC).“I would like to officially make it known that I have appointed the Madang Provincial Events Committee to look after Madang FC,” he stated.The Governor thanked the Madang Soccer Association, coaches, technical officials, referees and players for their commitment during the two-day trials, encouraging selected players to prove they are capable of representing Madang Province with pride.Madang Soccer Association President Siegfried Beschel thanked the Governor for his initiative in creating pathways for raw rural talent to rise through structured competition.He challenged those who make the final squad to prove themselves worthy of competing at a higher level.“The National Premier League is a high-level competition. The YWAM Medical Ship Ministry is playing a vital role in delivering integrated outreach health services to some of Madang Province’s most isolated communities, according to Madang Provincial Health Authority (PHA) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Martin Daimen.Dr. Daimen said the YWAM medical ship is specifically designed to reach remote coastal areas, islands and atolls, and at times even extend into inland communities where normal government health services often struggle to reach.He described the ministry’s work as more than just medical intervention, noting that it combines physical healthcare with mental health and spiritual support.“Our health system is largely designed to focus on the physical aspect of a person,” Dr. Daimen said. “But the human being is made up of the body, the soul and the spirit. To achieve true rehabilitation and restoration, we must consider the whole person.”Dr. Daimen explained that while the formal health system concentrates primarily on physical treatment, services such as mental health care and chaplaincy are essential components in delivering holistic or whole-person healthcare.He said the work of the YWAM Medical Ship should be viewed as an extended arm of the province’s health system, helping to fill service gaps in hard-to-reach areas.“The ownership is upon us as health authorities to reach out and invite them,” he said. “They can tell us what services they offer, and we can share our priority areas and challenges. From there, we can agree on priorities and work collaboratively to achieve results.”The Madang PHA is currently working closely with the YWAM team to deliver services to isolated coastal communities, islands and atolls across the province. One model of care that local health authorities can learn from, Dr. Daimen added, is the mobile clinic system used onboard the ship.He encouraged other districts and health facilities to engage with the YWAM team to better understand the services they provide and how they can complement existing government health programs.“Please invite them to your location or visit them and find out what services they can offer to help fill the gaps in our health system,” Dr. Daimen said.

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) has recorded an increase in dengue fever and malaria cases and is urging the public to take immediate preventive measures, particularly during the current period of heavy rainfall and heightened mosquito activity. According to PMGH Pathology Workload and Disease Surveillance data, the hospital has confirmed 86 positive cases of dengue and 18 cases of malaria. Some of the malaria infections involve Plasmodium falciparum, a more severe form of the disease. Hospital authorities say mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and malaria pose a serious public health risk and can lead to severe complications if not treated early. Dengue symptoms include high fever reaching up to 40°C (104°F), severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, and rash. Early symptoms of malaria commonly include fever, headache, and chills. The hospital is encouraging members of the public to seek early testing at their nearest health facility if they experience symptoms, to allow for timely diagnosis and treatment. PMGH emphasised that prevention remains the most effective protection against infection. The public is advised to eliminate stagnant water around homes and workplaces, use mosquito nets—especially at night—apply mosquito repellent regularly, wear long-sleeved clothing where possible, ensure water containers are properly covered, and keep surroundings clean and free of rubbish. The hospital is also taking precautionary steps by procuring additional dengue and malaria testing kits for the emergency department and children’s emergency unit. PMGH Chief Executive Officer Dr Paki Molumi said the hospital remains prepared to manage and treat cases, with ongoing surveillance to closely monitor the situation. Health authorities continue to stress that community cooperation will be critical in reducing mosquito breeding and limiting the spread of the diseases.

A remote high school at Dusin in Kovon Local Level Government area of Middle-Ramu District on Tuesday, February 10, received a morale boosting financial assistance of K50,000 by the Provincial Member and Governor for Madang Province, Ramsey Pariwa, to build a new classroom to accommodate Flexible Open Distance Education or FODE.Dusin is situated in a far-flung corner up in the cool misty mountain ridge of the Bismark Range and shares the borders of Madang, Western Highlands, Enga and East Sepik provinces and has no road connectivity. The only access is by light aircraft mostly via Kagamuga Airport in Western Highlands due to the distance.Governor Pariwa travelled into Dusin accompanied by the Member for Middle-Ramu and Assistant Speaker of the National Parliament, Kansol Harwai Kamdaru, on short notice mainly due to unreliable communication reaching the area. However, the turn out of the people at Dusin airstrip to meet and greet the leaders were exceptional. Even the mid-morning showers did not dampen their excitement and eagerness to meet and greet the two national leaders of the province.Mr. Pariwa, who is no stranger to Dusin and Kovon LLG after his two previous visits last year and the year before, explained that he has already sent a student from Kovon LLG to India under the FODE program and wants to provide more opportunities for school leavers who are doing nothing in the remote Kovon LLG after completing their formal education to resort to FODE by upgrading their marks to continue their education.  Governor’s support to FODE is basically to improve human resource base of Madang so that the future educated elites can support him develop the province.“I encourage youths who have completed grade 8 or 10 and are staying in the villages in Kovon to enroll at FODE to continue your education," Governor Pariwa said. “You must not look down on yourself as failures. You still have the knowledge in you however it is our education system that cannot accommodate you, but I am now offering you the second chance in FODE to return to education,” he explained.Governor Pariwa presented the K50,000 cheque to a senior teacher at Dusin Primary School, Desmond Ramnep, in the presence of the Dusin Ward Three-member, Mike Philip. The presentation was done after a memorandum of agreement was signed by the parties present regarding on the usage of the public funds, a system devised by the Governor’s Office on accountability and transparency in public funds disbursement.MP Kamdaru praised Governor Pariwa for vigorously promoting FODE and his continued support and assistance to rural schools in Middle-Ramu and other districts in Madang province.The local MP challenged his people particularly the board and management of schools in the five rural LLGs in Middle-Ramu District namely, Arabaka, Simbai, Kovon, Josephstaal and Wanuma to utilize the funds he had already allocated to build classrooms and not waste time playing politics.Furthermore, he also revealed the name of a certain board member misusing school funds to contest the recent LLG election.An officer with the Teaching Services Commission (TSC), Kenneth Kalai, who accompanied Governor Pariwa and the Middle-Ramu MP to Dusin explained that Kovon LLG schools are classified under ‘disadvantaged’ and there were instances where teachers make it their excuse of not turning up for work but staying away in town and getting paid. “I am now telling you parents that upon noticing failures by teachers not turning up in school to report to me immediately so that person is automatically deleted from the payroll system,” Mr. Kalai explained.MP Kamdaru told the gathering that Kovon LLG has less population compared to Arabaka, Simbai, Josepstaal and Wanuna LLG, however, there are many primary schools mushrooming in the area which is a big concern to him particularly in the allocation of funds.Mr. Kalai acknowledged MP Kamdaru’s concern and would need further information to warrant him to de-activate these schools which are popping up unnecessarily.

The National Government is fully prepared to responding decisively should the country be placed on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.That was the assurance given by Prime Minister James Marape to the people of Papua New Guinea as time draws closer to the time of the grey listing to commence. Prime Minister Marape said grey listing was not new to Papua New Guinea and that the Government had already made significant progress in addressing outstanding compliance issues.“This is not the first time Papua New Guinea has faced grey listing. It happened before, and we successfully worked our way out of it,” the Prime Minister said. He confirmed that the Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea and a highly competent technical team are currently engaging with international counterparts, including participation in assessment discussions in Mexico. “From the briefings I have received, Papua New Guinea now has only about nine outstanding issues. This is far fewer than where we were in 2015, when the country was first grey-listed,” Prime Minister Marape said. The Prime Minister assured the country that, if Papua New Guinea is grey-listed, his government will work “nonstop” to ensure an early exit. “I want to give assurance to the country that if we do enter the grey list, we will work to get out of it at the very earliest opportunity — just as we did before. It could be within months, not years,” he said. Prime Minister Marape highlighted major institutional and legislative reforms implemented since 2015, which have significantly strengthened Papua New Guinea’s framework for combating money laundering and related financial crimes. “Before 2015, there was no Independent Commission Against Corruption. Today, we have ICAC in place. Today, those provisions are embedded in our laws and regulations,” he said. He added that Papua New Guinea now has stronger mechanisms to detect and address money laundering and to monitor potential terrorist financing risks. “Our country is not a target for international terrorism financing. However, we are targeted for money laundering, and that is where our focus is. We are tightening our systems and strengthening enforcement across the country,” the Prime Minister said. Prime Minister Marape said that engagement with FATF processes can also be constructive, as it provides clarity on areas that require improvement. “If there are weaknesses, it helps us identify them clearly. I am focused on growing the economy, but I do not want to grow an economy where the sinkholes remain wide open,” he said. He confirmed that he has already held high-level meetings with law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and other key institutions to ensure a coordinated national response. “If grey listing points us to areas where we need to do better, then we fix them. We tighten the system, strengthen compliance, and come back stronger,” Prime Minister Marape said.

The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) is urging all associate and affiliated leagues to complete their registration ahead of the February 27th, 2026, deadline.PNGRFL General Manager for Community Rugby League, Mark Mom, said both new and existing leagues interested in affiliating with the national body should contact their respective regional confederate points of contact as soon as possible. “We want to ensure all league registrations are completed by 27 February to allow sufficient time for compliance checks and player registrations,” Mr Mom said. “Each region has designated points of contact, and we strongly encourage non-affiliated leagues to reach out to our officers. Affiliating with PNGRFL not only enables leagues to formally join their regional confederates, but it also allows us to provide support through upskilling in league administration, coaching, refereeing, and other development programs.” To boost league participation and compliance, PNGRFL introduced an incentive kit program in 2025, which will continue into the 2026 season. Mr Mom said the initiative was aimed at helping leagues improve the standard and organisation of their competitions. “In 2025, we provided incentive kits to support leagues in running their competitions,” he said. “These kits included game-day equipment such as goal post pads and corner posts, footballs, loud hailers, and audio systems. We will continue this initiative in 2026, with kits to be distributed prior to the commencement of competitions.” Aroma Coast Rugby League Chairman Chris Enara, whose league was among those that received the incentive kits, welcomed the program. “I believe the incentive kits will greatly benefit the rural communities where Aroma Coast Rugby League operates, especially in village settings,” Mr Enara said. “They help create a professional game-day environment, shift mindsets, and give communities a real sense of the standards expected in rugby league.” NCD Schools Rugby League President Arnold Gende also praised the initiative, describing it as a significant boost for the schools competition. “This is the first time we have received this level of support,” Mr Gende said. “Compared to previous seasons, this year will be different. The incentive kits are a game-changer, particularly in improving the standard of officiating.” League affiliation registrations close on February 27, 2026, while player registrations close on May 1, 2026, for associate (schools) and affiliate (senior) competitions. The 2026 competition calendar is scheduled as follows: Associate Leagues: April 3 – July 28, 2026 Affiliate Leagues: May 1 – September 27, 2026 Club Championships: October 9 – 25, 2026 PNGRFL has encouraged leagues to meet all deadlines to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated 2026 rugby league season.

The Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) has announced the expansion of its PNG Futsal League to Lae city with the 2026 Futsal Super League season for both men and women set to kick off in April.The move follows the successful introduction of the national futsal competition last year, which crowned its inaugural champions and attracted strong interest from clubs and players across the country. PNGFA said the decision to extend the competition beyond Port Moresby marks a significant step in growing the sport and providing more structured, high-level opportunities for athletes nationwide. The inclusion of Lae as a host city is expected to widen participation and strengthen talent development pathways within Papua New Guinea’s football system. The association has now called on interested franchise clubs to formally register their participation in the 2026 season. Clubs are required to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form along with a non-refundable fee of K3,000 by 5:00pm on Friday, February 27, 2026. The full affiliation fee of K5,600 and player registration payments must be completed by Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Player registration is set at K100 per player, with teams allowed a maximum squad of 14 players. The total payment per club amounts to K10,000. Matches for the upcoming season will be hosted in both Port Moresby and Lae, providing increased exposure and competitive opportunities for teams in both centres. All payments must be deposited directly into the PNGFA National Soccer League account at BSP Gordons Commercial branch, with proof of payment submitted to the PNGFA Competitions Department together with the completed EOI form. PNGFA officials say the 2026 Super League season is expected to deliver a fast-paced and professionally organized competition as futsal continues to grow rapidly across the country.
