Australia has established the Alpers Award for Excellence in Health Research to honor the late Professor Michael Alpers and his lifelong dedication to fighting infectious diseases in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The award is open to outstanding PNG citizens working in a field relevant to Professor Alpers’ research, such as graduate students, technical officers, public health policymakers, or early career researchers and clinicians.
The winner will receive funding to travel to Canberra and attend the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian Society of Infectious Disease (ASID).
Professor Alpers was a leading expert on infectious diseases in PNG and played a pivotal role in the discovery of prions, a new class of infectious agent, through his groundbreaking research on kuru.
Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency John Feakes said that Australia is delighted to continue the late Professor’s legacy by supporting a Papua New Guinean to deepen their knowledge of infectious disease and further strengthen the two countries’ commitment to the health of the Papua New Guinean people.
To be eligible, applicants must be PNG citizens with a demonstrated record of work and publication in a field related to Professor Alpers’ research.
