The Moresby Arts Theatre (MAT) with support from the Australian Incentive Fund have opened a new Arts Centre Hall.
After years of maintaining facilities through donations, craft markets and shows, this facility was a much-needed resource for Moresby Arts Theatre.
Notable speakers present at the official opening was, Minister for Cultural and Tourism, and Member for Vanimo-Green, Belden Norman Namah, Member for Moresby Northwest, Lohia Boe-Samuel, Australian High Commissioner, H.E. Ewan MacDonald and President of Moresby Arts Theatre, Bob Stanley.
Performers from the MAT acted out the story of how the theatre was established, drawing interest from the audience.
During his address, Minister Namah, expressed distraught over successive governments’ neglect of the MAT.
“I am ashamed to say that successive governments have overlooked this important historical institution of our country.”
“This place has been the home of Port Moresby arts and culture since 1975.”
“In its early days at downtown Port Moresby, where Deloitte’s Tower now stands, it was a thriving hub for storytelling, performances, and cultural exchanges.”
He noted the theatre’s location being close to the parliament as a good reminder of its significance to the country as well as being a home to notable playwrights.
“The centre has belonged to many Papua New Guinean celebrated playwrights, including the late Prime Minister Sir Rabbi Namilieu and the legendary Nora Vagi Brash.”
“A few that we should remember. Their literary and artistic works have been inspiration to the generation that came after.”
He acknowledged the immense work and presence of individuals in the MAT who have kept the institution thriving despite setbacks.
“I’d like to take this moment to acknowledge all of you here today for keeping this place, for making sure it thrives.”
“Special thanks to President Stanley and your team, The Australia’s Incentive Fund, The Australian government and the people of Australia as well as collaborating partners and sponsors, the project team, the art community, volunteers, supporters.”
“All of this would not be possible without your hard work and countless hours of dedication and commitment.”
“You optimized the spirit of unwavering belief in the role of art in place in our society for many years and in the many years to come.”
“Your efforts and investments in the redevelopment of the arts center now places this institution on a secure path to stand tall and endure the challenges for the next 50 years.”
