The SP PNG Hunters delivered a commanding performance in Round 8 of the Hostplus Cup on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
The Hunters were relentless, overpowering the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 30-12 at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby city.
The showdown displayed the Hunters attacking firepower early and often, running in six tries against the visitors. Star centre Brandon Nima led the charge with an outstanding hat-trick, crossing the line in the first half and the second half. His sharp footwork and power proved too much for the Seagulls’ defense.
Though Wynnum Manly struck first with a try from Ben Farr in the early 5th minute, the Hunters quickly responded and took control of the match. The halftime score saw the Hunters ahead 8-6 thanks to two tries from Nima, setting the stage for a dominant second half.
The home side accelerated in the second half with back-to-back tries from Sanny Wabo and Solo Wane, stretching their lead. Despite a second try from WM Seagulls Ben Farr in the 65th minute, time was not on their side leaving them too little too late to stay in competition.
The Hunters sealed the win in the final 20 minutes, with Nima completing his third try and Solo Wane adding his second. Though three conversions were unsuccessful, Jamie Mavoko and Trevor Solu added polish to a solid all-around effort with successful conversions, 30-12.
The Hunters’ strong defense and explosive offense proved decisive, giving the team and fans plenty to cheer about.
This win adds to the Hunters 4th win in 8 rounds, solidifying standing in the Hostplus Cup ladder in 3rd place and sends a strong message as they push to round-9 against the Norths Devils in Bishop Park, Brisbane, on Sunday May 18th,2025.
