A historic chapter was written in Port Moresby city as the SP PNG Hunters secured their very first ANZAC Round win at home since joining the Queensland Cup.
What an outstanding game it was, the Hunters demonstrated hard and heart in the home stadium, the Santos National Football Stadium.
Despite steady rain, the Hunters burst out of the gates with intensity, seizing an early lead against the third-placed Burleigh Bears 10-0 and refusing to let go. Ranked seventh on the ladder, the Hunters displayed incredible grit and resilience, holding off a fierce second-half surge from the Bears to secure a 22–14 victory in front of a passionate home crowd.
This match was more than just a thrilling contest of rugby league; it was a heartfelt tribute to the enduring ANZAC spirit and the legacy of PNG’s Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. Courage, unity, and perseverance were displayed proudly by both teams, honouring the deep history shared between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
Furthermore, the game plan and strategy were in order thanks to the special individuals, Coach Paul Aiton and Captain Ila Alu, whose leadership and discipline were instrumental in this unforgettable win. Their efforts reflect the growing strength and pride of PNG rugby league on the Queensland stage.
