Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for the National Capital District (NCD) and Central Provinces Commander, Benjamin Turi stresses to support more City Wardens around the Nation’s Capital District (NCD).
Commander Turi stressed this in a recent statement on Thursday 24th April 2025.
The continuous altercations between suspected individuals and the Port Moresby City Wardens have highlighted the growing need for strong collaboration between Police and City Wardens.
These incidents include a recent altercation that escalated into a fight but resolved by NCD Police.
The altercation was between an intoxicated individual and stationed City Wardens at Manu Market Bus stop in the afternoon of Thursday.
The swift response from the police unit was swift which led to the suspect’s arrest.
He is currently in custody and awaiting formal charges.
Acknowledging the significant drop in petty crimes since the City Warden’s launching last year in October 2024, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for the National Capital District and Central Provinces Commander, Benjamin Turi, commended the wardens for their presence in key hotspots, notably Gordons and Boroko.
Furthermore, Commander Turi announced that police will extend full support to the deployment of wardens in other areas, including Manu and Nine Mile.
He issued a stern warning that anyone obstructing wardens in the performance of their duties will be dealt with by law.
He emphasized that wardens play a vital role in maintaining order, especially in areas with limited police coverage.
Turi also clarified that the Commander of the Warden Program is Inspector Obert Jerry, who is a senior police officer in the command and is working closely with the police and the wardens.
Commander Turi further advised that any concerns about wardens should be reported to team leaders at designated tents or directly to Inspector Jerry.
“I want all city residents and the police to support that program because of the positive feedback we have seen.”
