The Vatican has confirmed today that Pope Francis has passed away today Easter Monday at aged 88 at his home at the Vatican.
The Pontiff recently spent his final weeks in hospital with an infection that developed into pneumonia in both lungs.
Pope Francis’ last appearance was at Saint Peter’s Square yesterday on Easter Sunday giving mass to the mass of catholic Faithfuls.
The Pontif’s recent visit to Papua New Guinea was in 2024.
Announcing the news today (21 April) camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Ferrell said: “At 7.35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.”
His funeral will take place within six days, and then – in contrast to most of his predecessors – Francis be buried in the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome’s Esquilino neighbourhood, rather than in the grottoes beneath St Peter’s.
