The Gerehu Police Station Commander (PSC) Inspector Hamson Tokally urge drivers to exercise extreme caution along the main roads in Port Moresby city following a serious road accident involving a 25-seater Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) bus.
The crash occurred near the National Research Institute (NRI) roundabout, where the PMV reportedly veered off the road, descending into a ditch, breaking into the fence and colliding with a tree in the Port Moresby Nature Park. The impact left several passengers injured, with the driver in critical condition.
“Police officers quickly secured the scene while awaiting the National St John Ambulance to assist the injured occupants,” said PSC Tokally.
He confirmed that multiple passengers sustained injuries with people sustaining major injuries transported to the Port Moresby General Hospital to be attended to.
The PMV Bus number four (4) was allegedly returning from Hanuabada village after purchasing betel nut bags and had taken an alternative route when the accident occurred. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, but investigation is now underway to determine what had happened.
Inspector Tokally highlighted growing concerns over unroadworthy vehicles operating across the city and warned drivers to be extra vigilant, particularly during peak traffic hours. He emphasized the need for responsible driving and proper vehicle maintenance to prevent such accidents.
Furthermore, he stressed that the official updated report will be released by the National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent as the investigation progresses.
This incident serves as a reminder for all commuters and drivers that safety on the road must never be taken lightly.
