More than a dozen passengers were injured in a serious road accident this morning in Port Moresby city after a 25- seater Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) bus ran off the road and crashed.
The serious road accident took place at the roundabout just opposite the Papua New Guinea (PNG) National Research Institute (NRI) at around 7:30AM, when the public transport bus ran off the road and crashed into the fence at the Port Moresby Nature Park.
The National St John Ambulance Operations Centre received the emergency call (111) at 7:58AM, reporting a motor vehicle accident involving a PMV coaster bus where the vehicle veered off the road at the NRI roundabout, crashing through the Port Moresby Nature Park fence, and collided head-on with a tree, causing severe injuries to many passengers on board.
According to the initial report, the St John ambulance promptly dispatched five ambulance units, two command response units, and one support unit to the scene. Ten ambulance officers, including one Health Extension Officer and one paramedic, attended to the victims. A total of 16 casualties were recorded at the scene.
“Three individuals sustained life-threatening injuries and were urgently transported to the hospital. Two others were classified as having serious injuries, while 11 had moderate injuries,” the St John Ambulance Service said.
However, one passenger with minor injuries did not require being transported to the hospital.
The St Johns Ambulance further praised the swift response and cooperation of police, fire services, security companies, the National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), and members of the public for their support.
The cause of the accident is under investigation; however, the PMV bus number four (4) was apparently illegally operating that particular PMV route when the accident occurred. The buses servicing that route are PMV buses numbers nine (9) and seven (7).
