The Station of the Cross is a significant religious event for Christians that is currently taking place in Port Moresby and many other centers around the country today on Good Friday.
The event involves a procession with the Cross being carried by the Faithfuls, starting from St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Boroko and will end at the Sacred Heart Parish in Hohola.
The Station of the Cross is led by the Archdiocese of Port Moresby and began at around 5am at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Boroko.
The Station of the Cross will go through 14 stations around the city and each station depicts the events in the Passion of Christ from his condemnation to his death on the cross and his burial.
Hundreds of City residents especially dedicated Catholics took part in the journey at 5am and are now at the 9th Station (Vision city).
The 14 stations of the cross have each catholic parish stationed there to receive the cross and includes:
- Jesus is condemned to death
- Jesus carries his cross
- Jesus falls the first time
- Jesus meets his mother
- Simon helps carry the cross
- Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
- Jesus falls the second time
- Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
- Jesus falls the third time
- Jesus is stripped of his garments
- Jesus nailed to the cross
- Jesus dies on the cross
- Jesus is removed from the cross
- Jesus is laid in the tomb
The journey of the cross used one side of the road around the city and participants included men, women, children, youths, even elderly men and women came out in numbers to carry the cross.
To the many Christians in the country and around the world Easter is very important to them as it is about Jesus Christ’s journey on earth and the crucifixion to set mankind free from the bondage of sin.
