Prime Minister James Marape has commended the historic appointment of Francesca Semoso, Member for North Bougainville, as the first female Member of Parliament to preside over a parliamentary session as Assistant Speaker.
Mr. Marape hailed this milestone as a significant advancement for gender representation in Papua New Guinea’s political landscape.
“After 50 years, this is a defining moment for our Parliament and our country. MP Francesca Semoso’s appointment is not just an achievement for women in politics but a testament to our commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and equal representation in leadership,” PM Marape stated.
He further emphasized the importance of this moment for the future of governance in Papua New Guinea.
“This achievement signals a shift in our political culture—one that embraces the contributions of women in decision-making and governance.
We must continue to encourage and support women who aspire to leadership roles,” he said.
PM Marape reiterated his government’s commitment to empowering women in leadership, adding that this is history in the making.
