Violence broke out at Nawaeb Block on Monday afternoon following escalating tensions between two factions, prompting a strong police response.
Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban confirmed that the conflict stemmed from an incident last weekend when a taxi belonging to a member of one faction was held up by criminals in the area.
In retaliation, the taxi driver allegedly attacked and seriously injured one of the suspects.
“The suspect was later rescued by his associates from Angau Hospital and, over the weekend, they gathered in numbers, demanding compensation from the other faction,” Kunyanban said.
Attempts to settle the matter peacefully failed, leading to further violence on Sunday and Monday morning.
During the confrontations, two individuals sustained pellet wounds but were treated and released from Angau Hospital.
Police intervened on Monday morning to restore order, but by the afternoon, a surprise attack was launched against one of the factions, resulting in several homes being set on fire.
Kunyanban said police responded swiftly, dispersing the criminal elements and their supporters, who fled into the mountains behind Birdwing.
“The situation remains tense, but we have a heavy police presence in the area until tomorrow morning,” he said.
“We advise the public to take precautions and avoid the location until the situation stabilizes.”
Kunyanban added that police will conduct further checks in the area on Tuesday morning.
He also urged residents to report any sightings of injured individuals who may have fled the scene.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police immediately.
