Mr. Larry Andagali, the Managing Director of TWL Group, has expressed deep gratitude to the families of the fallen police officers from Eastern Highlands, Southern Highlands, and Hela Provinces.
Recognizing their strength in choosing peace despite their grief, Andagali stated, “Your strength and resilience honor the memory of your loved ones and serve as a beacon of hope for our nation.”
The Highlands Highway, stretching around 700 kilometers, plays a critical role in Papua New Guinea’s economic stability and it serves as a key link between Lae and the Highlands, enabling the movement of goods that sustain businesses and communities.
However, ongoing lawlessness and deteriorating road conditions have made transportation increasingly dangerous for trucking companies and drivers.
Many within the industry face the constant risk of robbery, assault, and even roadblocks that disrupt operations.
A trucking company previously reported that they have been subjected to threats, including hijackings, physical violence, and the destruction of vehicles.
Recent incidents along the highway have only worsened these concerns and back in January, a police unit consisting of four officers and three civilians was ambushed near Mendi in the Southern Highlands.
The attack resulted in the death of Constable Noel Biape, while others sustained serious injuries.
Another officer, Constable Harry Gorano, who had been in a coma for three weeks due to injuries from the same attack, tragically passed away.
Following this, Gorano’s relatives staged a roadblock near Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, to demand justice for his killing.
The blockade, which affected the flow of traffic, was a reflection of growing frustrations over unresolved criminal cases and the community’s demand for accountability.
The Road Transport Association has voiced similar concerns, calling for urgent action to improve security measures along the highway.
The association has emphasized that these challenges directly affect trucking businesses, which are essential for keeping the country’s economy running smoothly. With continuous disruptions and heightened risks, the industry is struggling to operate efficiently.
Mr. Andagali stressed that achieving lasting peace and stability is a responsibility that falls on the people of Papua New Guinea.
“It is imperative to recognize that no external force can dictate how we live in peace and harmony. The responsibility lies within us, the people of Papua New Guinea, to find our place in society and co-exist peacefully.”
He closed with a powerful message, calling for divine guidance in these trying times.
“May our God, Datagaliwabe, continue to bless us and guide us toward a future filled with peace, prosperity, and unity.”
His words serve as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the collective effort needed to ensure safety, stability, and progress for the people of Papua New Guinea.
