The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNG TPA) has secured significant developments in the month of January in Central and Jiwaka Province, striding in strengthening tourism, cultural preservation, and sustainable development across the country.
Through strategic partnerships and targeted initiatives, TPA is enhancing local tourism potential, empowering communities, and celebrating the nation’s rich heritage.
One notable development is TPA’s sponsorship of K10,000 towards the 3rd successful Jimi Marita Festival in Jiwaka Province on January 16, 2025. The event highlighted the traditional and nutritional significance of Pandanus Conoidetis (Marita) also educating the public on Marita’s health benefits, which include carotene for eye health, tocopherol as an antioxidant, and omega fatty acids for heart and brain function.
Meanwhile, on January 17th, the TPA partnered with the Kairuku District Development Authority (DDA) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), focusing on sustainable development, cultural preservation, and strategic marketing. Key initiatives include the PNG Flag Festival, the development of the Owsenwke Cultural Centre, and the introduction of capacity-building programs such as tour guide and guest management training.
These efforts will equip locals with essential skills to sustain and grow the tourism industry. TPA’s support ensures promoting agritourism while fostering economic opportunities for local communities.
Furthermore, TPA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Eric Mossman Uvovo highlighted the initiatives’ role in driving economic growth and cultural pride, aiming to build a sustainable tourism sector that empowers communities and preserves heritage.
With structured governance, accountability, and long-term commitments, TPA continues to drive Papua New Guinea closer to becoming a leading destination for cultural and eco-tourism.
