The highly anticipated inaugural National Capital District (NCD) Governor’s Soccer Cup Tournament is set to ignite the soccer scene in Port Moresby city tomorrow, Sunday December 15th.
The tournament will be hosted at the Gerehu Secondary School sports fields. The fields will accommodate 12 matches on each field for the 48 confirmed teams within NCD.
The tournament promises big and exciting especially with the generous prizes up for grabs in the men’s division, with the first prize set at K10,000, followed by K5,000 for second place, K3,000 for third, and K2,000 for fourth. Prizes for the women’s division are yet to be announced.
Finals venues are under deliberation, with Sir John Guise and Sir Hubert Murray Stadiums being considered for their security and capacity to host a grand conclusion to the tournament.
Mr. Thomas Piliwos, the NCD Governor’s Soccer Cup Games Coordinator, urged the community to rally behind the event.
“Support us organizers to host a thrilling and exciting competition for us all to enjoy during this festive time,” he said.
Meantime, a team from the Bomana Correctional Services will be participating and despite a team from there to play in the main event, the inmates will very much be holding their own Governor’s Cup within the prison facility, ensuring everyone gets a chance to celebrate soccer.
This highly anticipated competition signals a new era for soccer in the NCD, fostering unity and excitement during the festive season.
