Papua New Guinea’s Golden Fish Ryan Pini was awarded as an inductee by the 2024 Papua New Guinea Sports Hall of Fame’s 8th Edition Induction on Thursday, November 7th, 2024, at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby.
The prestigious event, attended by PNG Olympic Committee President Emma Waiwai, Sports Minister Kinofa Feo, and Vodafone’s Chief Marketing Officer, recognized the inspiring contributions of these athletes to PNG’s sports sector.
One of PNG’s most celebrated athletes Ryan Pini after winning PNG’s first gold medal in the in the Olympics, delivered a heartfelt speech during the ceremony.
He expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received throughout his swimming career from his family, coaches, teammates, and the people of PNG.
Pini highlighted the significant role of his family and coaches in his journey from his first strokes in the pool to standing on the world’s podium.
He acknowledged the resilience and vibrant beauty of PNG, symbolized by the bird of paradise, and reflected on how his accomplishments were a testament to the nation’s spirit.
Pini’s career is marked by remarkable achievements, including winning gold in the 100m butterfly at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, earning 28 gold medals across five Pacific Games, reaching the finals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and winning bronze in the 100m backstroke at the 2012 World Aquatics Championships.
Beyond his swimming achievements, Pini has held influential governance roles and was recognized with an MBE in 2006 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
During his speech, Ryan shared that every time he competed on the international stage, he carried with him the dreams and aspirations of the nation.
Pini’s words resonated with the pride and dreams of the nation, inspiring future generations to believe in their potential and strive for excellence.
“When I think about my gold medal and my accomplishments, I see them as a reflection of the resilient spirit, spirit.”
“But not only merely a medal or a title, is a testament to the legacy of hope, pride and unity that all Papa Guinness carried with them.”
Despite Ryan’s shoulder surgeries from numerous injuries, he still pushed himself to the best of his ability with genuine support management in his every decision. The cost of his achievement has stimulated and promoted the love for swimming to many young prospects to this day.
Furthermore, Ryan also expressed his heart felt gratitude to the many supporters in his personal and sports journey, acknowledging their commitment to his well-being.
Ryan Pini was inducted alongside (Athletics) Subul Babo on Thursday November 7th at the APEC Haus, Port Moresby.
They are now part of 25 Inductees present day.
