In a significant development for Papua New Guinea’s coffee industry, a new coffee export office has been inaugurated in Lae.
The state-of-the-art facility, strategically located in the country’s industrial hub, is designed to ensure that PNG’s exportable green coffee beans meet international standards, enhancing the nation’s reputation in global markets.
Charles Dambui, CEO of the Coffee Industry Corporation, highlighted the office’s pivotal role in providing comprehensive quality assessment and certification services.
“Quality control officers rigorously evaluate unroasted coffee beans to meet specific requirements set by international buyers, fostering trust and reliability in PNG’s coffee exports.”
The facility includes a ground-level reception area and chemical laboratory for initial assessments, where coffee beans from various exporters are meticulously scrutinized to ensure compliance with stringent safety and quality standards.
The administrative functions and meeting rooms on the upper level of the complex facilitate seamless coordination of export documentation, streamlining the process for exporters.
Equipped with advanced testing and compliance equipment, the facility ensures that PNG coffee consistently meets or exceeds international standards, crucial for maintaining and enhancing the country’s standing in the competitive coffee market
Additionally, the office serves as a central point for collecting levies, contributing to the continued development and support of PNG’s coffee industry.
As PNG expands its coffee exports to major markets, including China, the United States, Germany, Japan, and Australia, this new office is expected to play a critical role.
“The inauguration of the Lae coffee export office marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to promote the coffee industry, ensuring high-quality exports and supporting the economic empowerment of Papua New Guineans through agriculture.”
