Fr Gibbs said that they have asked for help from the head of the Madang fire service and are checking to see if there were any witnesses to how the fire started.
“The administration is awaiting the fire department’s report and is inquiring among security personnel and students for any additional information.”
“There are no conclusive findings so far.”
When asked about potential suspects or motives, particularly regarding possible retaliation from suspended students, Fr. Gibbs acknowledged it as a possible motive.

“I cannot say any more as we will be seeking assistance from the police,” he said.

Addressing how the university handles student grievances and disciplinary actions, Fr. Gibbs explained that the university has a Student Disciplinary Board, and appeals are possible through the Student Appeals Committee and stated that there are always some who are unhappy with the disciplinary actions.
Furthermore, he expressed relief that the fire was contained to a storage shed.
“I cannot answer for everyone, but personally I am relieved that it was a tool shed and not a dorm.”
