The Member of Parliament (MP) for Popondetta Open, Richard Masere, who is also the Minister responsible for the National Statistics Office (NSO), announced at a media conference yesterday that preparations for the 2024 National Census are well underway.
Minister Masere was joined by National Statistician, Mr. John Igitoi and a representative from Max Industrials, the company contracted to supply the tablet computers essential for data collection during the census.
Minister Masere emphasized the significance of the upcoming census, which occurs once every ten years.
“The progress of the National Census is well, truly into its advanced stages,” he stated, ensuring the public that the preparations are on track and in good order.
A key highlight was the announcement of the delivery of 8, 000 tablet computers, with an additional 14, 000 to arrive soon.
These tablets, airlifted from Hong Kong, will be used by enumerators to collect data across the country’s 22 provinces from June 17th to June 30th.
The minister highlighted the logistical support sought from the Australian High Commission to ensure smooth distribution.
Minister Masere acknowledged the delay in conducting the census, initially planned for 2021 but postponed due to COVID-19 and other issues.
He reassured the public, “We are now ready to deliver the Census after a 13-year wait,” emphasizing the importance of accurate data for national planning and development.
The National Statistician, Mr. John Igitoi, also provided details on the census operations, noting the importance of the new tablets in enhancing data collection efficiency.
“These tablets will cut down the statistical processing time significantly and provide quality information with on-field data checks,” said Mr. Igitoi.
He also mentioned that the tablets are part of a broader government initiative to digitize information.
Mr. Igitoi also addressed the financial aspects and the support from various government bodies.
Despite some delays in the procurement process, the supplier, Max Industrials, proceeded with the orders in good faith.
“The government had released so far K80 million,” Mr. Igitoi explained, expressing gratitude to the supplier for their confidence in the government.
Representing Max Industrials, the supplier explained the specifics of the tablets and accessories provided, including power banks, portable battery systems, and protective gear for the tablets.
“We have ordered 1, 000 extra tablets to support any technical needs,” the supplier noted, highlighting their commitment to ensuring a smooth census process.
Minister Masere also emphasized the importance of the census data in national planning.
He stated, “Once we provide the data, the country will be able to reset and take on the challenges going forward,” referring to the adjustments needed in various sectors based on the updated population numbers.
In closing, Mr. Igitoi reiterated the importance of the census, describing it as a crucial event for understanding the population dynamics and planning for future needs.
“NSO is prepared from the 17th to the 30th of June,” he affirmed, thanking all involved parties for their support and collaboration.
