Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Lae, John Rosso, hails the initiation of the PNG NRL Bid Academy Program in Lae, marking a significant stride in junior development pathways through an Australia-Papua New Guinea partnership.
Speaking on the occasion, PNG International Justin Olam emphasized the critical need for an effective academy program in Papua New Guinea before expressing interest in becoming the 18th NRL club.

The program, aimed at nurturing young talents, has been established in multiple centres including Port Moresby, Lae, Kokopo, Goroka, and Mt Hagen, with plans to expand to other regions in the future.
Aligned with NRL clubs’ training standards in Australia, the program is currently overseen by former NRL coaches, trainers, and officials.
Deputy Prime Minister Rosso highlighted the long-term benefits of such initiatives, emphasizing the potential for positive outcomes as the program matures.
Encompassing players from Under 15 to 19, including girls, the academy ensures participants are fully equipped with training gear and facilities.
Deputy Prime Minister Rosso commended the governments of both countries for their substantial investment in the program, underscoring its significance in addressing the longstanding gaps in rugby league development.
Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Rosso, a staunch supporter of school’s rugby competitions in Lae since his election in 2017, pledged increased funding support and resources for the initiative.
He also emphasized the involvement of parents in supporting their children’s.
