NICKEL 28 Capital Corporation, formerly Highlands Pacific, has continued its commitment to supporting the training of more qualified geoscientists for the Papua New Guinea (PNG) resources sector.
The Toronto-based Company, which holds an 8.56% joint-venture interest in the world-class Ramu Nickel Cobalt operation in the Madang province, is into its second year of supporting a Tertiary Students Sponsorship Package in partnership with the Earth Sciences Division of the School of Natural and Physical Sciences (SNPS) at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).
The Nickel 28 Capital Corp. Student Scholarship was established in 2023 for the Best First Year Student enrolled as Year 2 Earth Sciences Students in 2023.
Nickel 28 Capital’s Head of Asia Pacific, Craig Lennon announced at the awarding of the scholarship to two awardees that the company has committed to growing this scholarship to have at least three students being supported in Year 2, Year 3, and Year 4.
“This is only our second year with this scholarship. We began last year with the goal of establishing an ongoing program with three students each year.”
“Shirley Ambang, our 2023 Scholarship Awardee, will continue her scholarship this year, while Carlos Tongia, the other recipient of this award, will receive his first year of the scholarship in his second year of study.”
“We (Nickel 28) want to give back to PNG, specifically in an area that requires assistance and having more professional geoscientists is an area that requires additional support.
“Geology is the foundation of the resource industry. We can’t develop minerals unless we find them.”
Nickel 28 Corp. says it is committed to investing further in the development of professional geoscientists.
“Last year, it cost K19, 000. This year, it will be two K19, 000, and the following year, three K19, 000.”
“Currently, we are doing this with UPNG, but we are considering including other universities in this scholarship program.”
