Kagamuga Airport in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands Province remain operational and is secured despite the cancellation of flights into the airport yesterday afternoon.
National Airports Corporation Managing Director Rex Kiponge gave this assurance to the travelling public after yesterday’s turn of events where the public protested in front of the terminal over election related grievances.
Mr Kiponge said NAC did not closed the airport operation as speculated and the decision to air return flights yesterday were done by respective airline operation, something of which NAC has no jurisdiction to decide on.
“The civil unrest at the terminal was controlled by the joint security officers from Aviation Security, contracted security companies and the police Mobile Squad,” Mr Kiponge said.
“As I speak the airport is secured and on normal operations.”
Kiponge further said that NAC has done up the election security operations plan and will work together with the joint security forces in police, PNG Defense Force, and CIS personnel during the election period.
