The Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) rigorous selection process of interested persons to run under its party banner for the 2022 National General Election, has seen only two female intending candidates to contest in the election selected.
The two female candidates are Dorothy Tekwei for the West Sepik Regional seat and Angela Nelson for the Alotau Open seat in Milne Bay province.
According to Party Leader and Governor for National Capital District (NCD), Powes Parkop, the two females were selected among a huge number of people that submitted application requesting the run under the party banner in the election.
“Many have put up their hands to be endorsed by our party. On the record about six hundred expressed interests,” said the governor.
“Processing it was not easy, choosing was even harder so I want to say that we have gone through a very exhausting process. We have done our best because the country and the people deserve the best and nothing else.”
Parkop said the job of providing leadership is not easy as it is a very serious responsibility for a person to take; therefore, the party executives must make sure that only the ones they consider having a chance to do very well in the election, are chosen as indenting candidates.
Meanwhile, other notable intending candidates chosen by the SDP include Fr. Simon Dumarinu for Central Bougainville Open seat, outgoing SDP Party President Mr. Kenn Mondiai for the Eastern Highlands Regional Seat, and former National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) boss Mr. Joseph Eladona for the Samarai Murua Open seat in the Milne Bay province.
In closing the announcement of the endorsement of the intending candidates, Governor Parkop reassured all of them that the party will give its full support to them during the campaigning period.
