National Book Week celebrations at Kopkop College ignites imagination and creativity amongst the students and helps them understand the importance of appreciating books.
Under the theme “Lock-down, Stay Safe and Read Books”, Kopkop College observed the 2021 National Book Week through a number of activities including paying a visit to the National Library with other schools in NCD.
Apart from the library visits, Kopkop College students also took part in poster competitions, watched educational films, had lively reading sessions, wrote and read poems, did role plays, book reviews and ended the week with a book character costume parade.
PNG writer and author of “Age of Irony”, David Soroda who attended the costume parade on Friday, August 6th said he really enjoyed the performances, particularly the costume parade, which involves a class dressing up as book characters.
“…The idea behind the costume parade is that having kids dress up in their favorite character inspires them to read more about those characters. It’s a successful part of the book week program at Kopkop College which the students enjoy so much,” Kopkop College Librarian, Margaret Maha said.
“I enjoyed the performances so much…I think that’s a creativity that reflects the efforts put in by the teachers of Kopkop College and the students as well,” Mr Soroda said, while pointing out the need for schools to embrace the idea of e-libraries due to COVID-19’s impact on learning in schools.
The National Book Week Celebration and its fun activities embraces Kopkop College’s solid reading foundation instilled amongst early learners.
Kopkop College also runs an active reading program especially for its primary school students. Mrs Maha says the reading program keeps a tab on student’s reading pace through a book-log, and the program has successfully seen young learners catch up in reading. She added that the book-log allows parents to keep track of their child’s reading.
So far, the program has boosted home-reading and encouraged a lot of parents to take an active interest in their child’s learning.
Encouraging reading at an early age helps spark curiosity and learning amongst kids, and Kopkop College is proud of the reading progress achieved amongst its students.
“We look forward to celebrating the 2022 National Book Week next year, and to once again showcase what Kopkop College does as a school to promote reading and learning,” says Mrs Maha.
