Papua New Guinea has recorded 19 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday June 23, increasing the total number of cases to 17,079.
The cases were reported in five provinces. Milne Bay province reported 13, followed by New Ireland and Madang with two each and the National Capital District, and Jiwaka with one case each.
Of the 19 new cases 12 are males, and seven are females. Thirteen of the new cases were symptomatic at the time of testing, 11 had existing medical conditions and three had to be hospitalised.
Total deaths remain at 173. To date 131,712 tests have been conducted for COVID-19 with 201 samples pending laboratory results.
The total recovery cases in PNG is 16,518 with 407 active cases within the last 21-day period.
The cumulative statistics for the 17,098 confirmed COVID cases are as follows:
• Male – 10,741;
• Female – 6,262;
• Symptomatic – 9,204;
• Comorbidities – 3,040;
• Hospitalised – 566;
• On ventilator – 37;
• Contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases – 3,561; and
• Health care workers – 1,632;
As of June 22, a total of 49,333 people have been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. This includes health care workers (7,341), essential workers (39,094) and persons with existing medical conditions or comorbidities (2,898).
Globally there were 179,912,915 reported cases of COVID-19 with 3,897,391 recorded COVID-19 deaths.
