The long-awaited Santos 50th Anniversary Orchid Garden in Port Moresby Nature Park has officially opened to the public this morning 1st November 2025, marking another milestone in celebrating Papua New Guinea’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.
The garden, which was launched on September 17th by NCD Governor Powes Parkop, is one of the park’s most significant additions in recent years.
Located within the Independence Hill precinct, the new one-hectare garden showcases a stunning collection of orchids from across Papua New Guinea, including rare and unique species found only in the country.
The official opening Tour began at 8:00 a.m. with an exclusive Members-Only tour, allowing Park members to be the first to experience the garden before it was opened to the general public later in the day.
Port Moresby Nature Park Conservation Manager Francis Otto Gundu described the garden as a space designed not only to preserve native orchid species but also to educate and inspire visitors about PNG’s exceptional biodiversity.
“Papua New Guinea is home to over 3,000 known orchid species — some found nowhere else in the world,” a Fransic said. “This garden gives visitors the opportunity to experience our natural heritage up close, right here in the city.”
In addition to its botanical displays, the garden features cultural artefacts from various regions, reflecting the deep connection between PNG’s natural environment and its diverse cultural traditions.
The project also emphasizes capacity building, with local horticulturalists like Francis working alongside international volunteers to train staff and young Papua New Guineans in orchid cultivation and conservation.
The Nature Park acknowledged Santos as the major sponsor of the project, alongside other partners who contributed to its development.
“This has been a collaborative effort between our sponsors, partners, and the community,” Francis added. “We’re proud to open a space that celebrates both our biodiversity and our people’s shared commitment to preserving it.”
The Santos 50th Anniversary Orchid Garden is now open daily at the Port Moresby Nature Park, welcoming visitors to explore the vibrant colors, rare orchid species, and cultural displays that celebrate the heart and beauty of Papua New Guinea.
