Three suspects are in police custody and will undergo a thorough investigation following the tragic death of Senior Police Constable, the late George Lapon in Hela province.
Police in Hela Police have apprehended two men and a woman following suspicious behaviour portrayed during the time of incident on Friday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for the Western End, Joseph Tondop emphasized assurance to PNG Hausbung of the police force’s unwavering commitment to solving this murder case of one of its own.
“We will not rest until we get to the bottom of this,” he stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the investigation.
ACP Tondop stressed that according to initial reports, the woman who was with late Constable Lapon at the time of the incident has been taken into custody, along with two other individuals present within the vicinity where the incident took place.
“Police are working diligently to clarify their roles and gather further evidence. Leading the investigation is the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in Tari, supported by local law enforcement, “said Tondop.
While acknowledging that fear has driven some people into hiding, ACP Tondop said community cooperation in advancing the investigation should help police. He expressed confidence that as tensions ease, more information would surface.
“The community’s assistance is vital. We are working with local leaders to encourage cooperation and ensure the safety of everyone involved,” he said.
The late Senior Constable George Lapon lost his life in Tari town on Friday 20th December 2024. He served with distinction for 15 years in Hela Province’s Special Service Division Mobile Squad 09. He was well known and respected and his death has sent shockwaves through the community.
